Southern CA - Fifty in Five
Initiative:  Clean Water
Chapter(s):  Newport Beach
Description:  The goal of 50 in 5 is to reduce pollution at the mouth of the Santa Ana River by 50% in 5 years. RJ's is a popular surfing and recreation site, and the chapter has received numerous complaints about water quality there over the years. The plan is to divert water from the Greenville-Banning Channel, the major source of urban runoff at this end of the river, into ponds where pollutants could be removed by natural processes before the water is discharged into the river. 50 in 5 is part of the Orange Coast River Park, one thousand acres of proposed open space along the river, and has the support of the County of Orange and City of Costa Mesa, among others. The chapter has applied for and will continue to apply for grants to fund this program. Ideas for contacts are welcome and should be directed to Nancy Gardner, gardnerncy@aol.com or Ray Halowski, soswaterrays@yahoo.com.
