Central CA: Blue Water Pismo
Initiative:  Clean Water
Chapter(s):  San Luis Bay
Description:  The San Luis Bay Chapter is working with public agencies to determine the source of high bacteria counts and resulting beach closures in the City of Pismo Beach. The County seems to think that pigeons are the source of the problem, but the San Luis Bay chapter is working to investigate the source(s), including a possibly-leaking sewer line. In the meantime, the Chapter is working with the City and County to minimize the pigeon droppings that may be contributing to the high bacteria counts.

Goals:
Objective 1: Improve public notification of dangerously high bacteria counts (when the beach should be closed)
Progress: permanant metal flip-signs have been installed for reliable notification at important coastal access points

Objective 2: Identify possible sources of impairment
Progress: With pressure and support of the SLB Chapter, the City of Pismo Beach has applied for and been awarded a state grant to commence a bacterial source tracking study. The goal of the study is to identify the likely sources of contamination in the nearshore waters in close proximity to the pier.

Objective 3: Get the county water monitoring program to move their testing to Thursdays or Fridays (so that weekend beach visitors are aware of current water quality) and to increase the number of sites monitored
Progress: San Luis Obispo County is experiencing budget cuts and the current water quality monitoring sites are on the chopping block. These funding cuts from the County would result in a reduction of sampling sites from 20 to 8.

Objective 4: Remediation of problem
