We've Got It Made in the Shade With the Debut of the New "Great White"
By Cathay Che
It may look like just a white tent, customized with bright blue Surfrider logos TO YOU, but the new "Great White" (as we affectionately call her) reflects Surfrider NYC's renewed commitment to making our presence known and spreading the word about urgent surf and environmental issues here on our home coast. While we've been tabling around town all summer (notably at Jack Johnson concerts and Gen Arts' Step Into Liquid Screening After-Party), the "Great White" makes it official - we're ready to provide a vital hub for NYC surfers and coastal activists.
We'll be bringing out the baby for her first appearance on Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th at the Long Beach Arts & Crafts Show, sponsored by the Long Beach Historical And Preservation Society. This annual event puts us smack dab in harm's way - it's a highlight of the summer season that brings dozens and dozens of groups, merchants, vendors and spectators together right on the Long Beach boardwalk. We'll be spreading the word about the controversial 'Sand Replenishment' issue in Long Beach, and selling our merch to raise money for future Surfrider NYC projects, but as the final weeks of the national Surfrider membership drive are upon us, our main goal will be to swell our ranks with new members.
You can help. First and foremost, if you are not yet a member of Surfrider - join right now by clicking on the Membership link and be sure (VERY IMPORTANT) to indicate that you want to be affiliated with the NYC chapter. And/or volunteer - come to the Surfrider NYC monthly meeting this week Weds, August 20th 6:45pm at the Patagonia store in Soho at 101 Wooster Street between Prince & Spring Streets, to get hooked-up in person and we'll arrange for you to meet us in the shade of the "Great White" this coming weekend. If you're not that organized, just swing by the Long Beach boardwalk and find us Saturday or Sunday, 9AM - 6PM(we're hard to miss!) and we'll set you up on the spot.
