Snowriders at Stowe, VT (Jan. 31st-Feb. 2nd)

Northern Lights Lodge

Northern Lights Lodge
On Friday, 31st Jan. I drove upto Stowe with Joel Banslaben (aka Method) and Erin Donnelly (who had just flown in from Hawai'i). Arriving late Friday evening, Stowe revealed its mountain charm through dimly lit lodges. If you haven't been, it's well worth the 5-6 hour ride.

Upon our arrival at the Northern Light, we were welcomed by Al Holzgruber, the owner of the Northern Lights Lodge. I would like to pass along Surfrider's deepest thanks for all his efforts in ensuring our comfort throughout the weekend. Of the 40 odd Surfrider volunteers who stayed there...all felt he did a supreme job. Hopefully, we will revisit the 'Light' in the near future.

On Saturday morning, the volunteers met at the 'Midway Lodge' to disseminate information about the Snowrider Project and the role of mountain regions in the hydrologic cycle. Our message was well received by all ages, particularly on the part of some young rascals in David Prescott's (Rhode Island) watershed model. That evening we partied at Jose's Cantina where we watched Project Switch, and had a raffle. Carol Tobian and the Massachusetts chapter did a great job in spear-heading the event, and deserve all our thanks for making the event such a success.

Luckily, Sunday's conditions were near perfect, and all the lifts were open. Once again, volunteers worked at 'Midway' over the course of the day. This was the first of the Snowrider trips in the Northeast, and bodes well for the future. The precedent has been set. Thanks to all who attended.

The Snowrider Project brings a greater understanding of the intimate environmental connection between snow, land and surf.
