Versión española August 15, 2006 - Reconnecting with My Roots By Elizabeth Ruiz Fresh off the plane in Aguadilla, I was just in time for Surfrider’s August meeting. Now, there’s a welcome for you! Topic of discussion: Preparing for Hurricane Season. There’s nothing like a natural disaster to remind us of how fragile life really is on earth and in the ocean too. Hurricanes also remind us of how the earth and the ocean are and always will be connected. Here for 35 days on an internship with Surfrider, I start to realize there’s a possibility I might encounter a Hurricane. So I take notes and hope for the best. I was given a wonderful opportunity to go on an internship for a non-profit organization by the company I work for, Patagonia. Patagonia is an environmentally friendly outdoor clothing company that uses recycled plastic and organic cotton with a purpose to use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. With the opportunity given to me to volunteer my services to a non-profit organization anywhere in the world, I started thinking how I would be able to combine my love for the ocean and my bilingual skills. The answer came instantly to me, where else would I go, but to the island where my parents were born, La Isla Del Encanto with the Surfrider Foundation in Rincón, Puerto Rico! The nature of my internship is to gauge people’s awareness and perceptions of the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, which is located right here in the municipality of Rincón. Through Surfrider, I am working with the University of Puerto Rico and SeaGrant. I am conducting 1 on 1 interviews with people of Rincón from all walks of life. I will get the chance to use my bilingual skills to record the voices of the people, also known as “la voz del pueblo.” Our focus is to reach out to long-time residents. My goal will be to interview 200 Rincoeños. I hope to connect with the people of Rincón to create a sense of awareness and foster empowerment for these people, who for whatever reason, might not have a clue that right in their own town exists something beautiful. Something that was given to them by Mother Nature. Something so marvelous, and so fragile that it will take everyone in the town, not just surfers or fishermen to protect, and watch over it. That is what Rincón’s Tres Palmas Marine Reserve is. It is a source of life for the people here in Rincón and for the ecosystem in the ocean. The results of all these interviews will be interesting to see. They will give us a better understanding as to where the gaps are that need to be bridged and what are these gaps. English version above 15 de agosto de 2006 - Conectándome con Mis Raíces Por Elizabeth Ruiz Acabadita de bajarme del avión en Aguadilla, estaba justo a tiempo para la reunión de Agosto de Surfrider. ¡Esto sí es una bienvenida! Tema de la charla: Preparándose para la Temporada de Huracanes. No hay nada como un desastre natural para recordarnos que la vida en esta tierra es tan frágil como la vida en el océano. También que la tierra y el mar son y siempre estarán conectados. De visita por 35 días haciendo trabajo comunitario para Surfrider y ya me estoy dando cuenta que hay una posibilidad que me encuentre con un huracán. Con esto en mente escribo notas y espero lo mejor. Tuve esta gran opportunidad de trabajar como interna para una organización sin fines de lucro através de la compañía en la cual yo trabajo en Nueva York, Patagonia. Patagonia es una compañía que se se preocupa por el ambiente como por ejemplo haciendo ropa para deportes al aire libre de plástico reciclado y algodón orgánico con el propósito de usar su empresa para implementar soluciones hacia la crisis del medio ambiente. Con la oportunidad que me brindaron de ofrecer mis servicios a una organización sin fines de lucro en cualquier parte del mundo, me puse a pensar como iba a combinar mi amor por el océano y mi habilidad bilingüe. La respuesta me vino instantáneamente. ¡A dónde más podría ir que para la isla donde mis padres nacieron, La Isla Del Encanto, con la Fundacion Surfrider en Rincón, Puerto Rico! La naturaleza de mi trabajo comuntario conlleva medir el conocimiento y la percepción que tiene la gente sobre la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas. Esta reserva o área protegida está localizada aquí mismo en el Municipio de Rincón. Através de Surfrider voy a estar trabajando con la Universidad de Puerto Rico y Seagrant del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez. Estaré entrevistando a la gente de Rincón. Las entrevistas se llevarán a cabo de persona en persona con residentes de diferentes sectores del pueblo de Rincón. Tendré la oportunidad de usar mis habilidades bilingües para documentar las voces de pueblo. Nuestro enfoque es llegar a los residents que han vivido por muchos años en Rincón. Mi meta es entrevistar a 200 Rincoeños. Tengo esperanzas de crear enlaces con la gente de Rincón. Espero cultivar un sentido de conscientización y poder personal para ellos que, por la razón que sea quizás no tengan una pista de que en el mismo pueblo en donde viven existe una cosa tan bella, una cosa regalada a ellos por la madre naturaleza. Algo tan maravilloso y tan frágil que van a tener que ser todos en el pueblo no solo los surfistas y los pescadores, los que protejan y velen por ella. Es eso lo que es la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas de Rincón. Es una fuente de vida para la gente aquí en Rincón, y para el ecosistema del océano. Los resultados de estas entrevistas serán interesantes. Nos traerán un mejor entendimiento de qué nos falta para hacer nuestro compromiso con el mar y con la comunidad, más efectivo, y de como enlazarlos a ambos.
