December 6, 2005 - USGS to help Rincón Search for Cause of its Coastal Erosion

Rincón, PR - The United States Geological Survey (USGS) commenced work on a coastal erosion study in Rincón this week. As part of these efforts, USGS staff held a forum at the Cooperativa de Ahorro y Credito de Rincón with representatives of the Municipality, Commonwealth agencies, and community members to disucss the current project. The presentations focused not only on the existing project, but also included a discussion of what other studies might be considered as Rincón searches for solutions to its serious coastal erosion crisis that threatens beach access, quality of life, marine species, including sea turtles, and may jeapordize tourism - the motor of the local economy.

The aim of the project is to survey the shoreline position between Punta Higüero and Punta Cadena along the west coast of Puerto Rico and compare the results to the most recent GPS-based survey conducted in 1994. Thieler et al. (1995) used the 1994 field survey data, along with analysis of historical shoreline positions from aerial photography, for a comprehensive shoreline change analysis. Their results indicated large areas of severe erosion (up to approximately 3.0 m/yr) and dramatic changes in nearshore and coastal sedimentation, likely due to the marina construction at Punta Ensenada (Thieler et al., 1995; Fig. 11). The proposed GPS-based survey of the most recent shoreline position will evaluate the shoreline change trends along this section of the coast over the past eleven years, and assess the effects of the Punta Ensenada marina on the downdrift shoreline.

6 de diciembre 2005 - Rincón busca la causa de su grave erosión costera

RINCÓN, PR - El Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos (USGS, por sus siglas en inglés), comenzó ayer un estudio de la costa de Rincón para determinar las causas del acelerado proceso de erosión y las medidas que se pueden tomar para detenerlo.

El estudio estará a cargo de los geólogos Rafael W. Rodríguez, director del USGS en Nueva York, y Bill Schwab, director de la Oficina de Geología Marina del USGS, dependencia adscrita al Departamento del Interior federal. Desde hace varios años, las playas de Rincón se han estado achicando, lo que podría tener consecuencias graves para el turismo y la economía del municipio, señaló el alcalde Carlos López Bonilla.

"Esto puede ser devastador para nuestro pueblo. Uno de nuestros atractivos turísticos es la playa y si perdemos el área de playa, estaremos perdiendo el eje central, nuestra punta de lanza para el turismo en nuestro pueblo", expresó López.

Destacó que ante la alarmante situación, el municipio invirtió $99,997 en contratar al USGS para que estudie la costa, desde el barrio Barrero hasta Punta Higuera, y le recomiende un plan de acción para recuperar la arena perdida y salvaguardar las playas para futuras generaciones.

Pedro L. Díaz, director del USGS en Puerto Rico y el Caribe, señaló que efectivos de su dependencia estarán levantando data en la costa rincoeña hasta el sábado, para luego analizarla en los laboratorios de la agencia.
Díaz explicó que el estudio actual será una reevaluación del que hizo la agencia en el año 1994, cuando se inició el problema en ese sector. Ese primer estudio, según Díaz, encontró que la construcción de una marina en Punta Ensenada alteró el movimiento de la arena. Esta no estaba llegando a la costa porque se estaba perdiendo en la plataforma insular y saliendo del sistema.
