Versión española December 7, 2006 - Our Changing Shoreline: USGS Shares Results of Study By Steve Tamar At the general meeting on the 7th of December, Dr. E. Robert Thieler of the U.S. Geological Survey gave a presentation titled “The History of Shoreline Changes at Rincón, Puerto Rico, 1936 – 2005.” Given the vital importance of beaches to our town, I’m glad to report we had a capacity audience of not only members, but also other concerned Rincoeños (including the mayor) as well as folks from nearby towns. Dr. Thieler is very familiar with our beaches and has conducted several surveys of our western coastline from Punta Higuero to Punta Cadena since 1983, and he was very honest in describing the strengths and weaknesses of the various survey methods (like digitally re-imaging old aerial photos) and the statistical analysis of this data. Without even trying to summarize the extremely informative talk (frankly, you had to be there) I could briefly describe the major conclusions as: 1) There is no single or primary cause of coastal erosion; 2) Due to global warming the beach will continue to advance inland as sea levels rise; 3) The most sensitive section of coastline studied is the stretch from the “marina” south to Playa Los Almendros, which is eroding 2 – 3 meters per year; 4) Closing the marina seems to have made no significant change in the erosion rate of that area; 5) That the usual response to beach advancement – the building of seawalls – inevitably results in permanent loss of beach anywhere it is done. ------------- English version above 7 de diciembre de 2006 - Nuestro Litoral Cambiante: USGS Comparte Resultados del Estudio Por Steve Tamar En la reunión general del 7 de diciembre, el Dr. E. Robert Thieler del U.S. Geological Survey dió una presentación titulada "La Historia de los Cambios en las Costas de Rincón, Puerto Rico, 1936-2005." Dada la gran importancia de las playas para nuestro pueblo, me place informar que la audiencia se llenó a capacidad no sólo de miembros, pero también de otros Rincoeños preocupados (incluyendo al alcalde) así como la gente de municipios aledaños. El Dr. Thieler está muy al tanto de nuestras playas y ha llevado a cabo varios estudios de las costas del area oeste desde Punta Higuero hasta Punta Cadena desde 1983, y él fue muy honesto en describir las ventajas y desvantajas de los varios métodos de estudios (como arreglos digitales de las viejas fotos aéreas) y al análisis estadístico de estos datos. Sin intentar de resumir la extremadamente informativa charla (honestamente, tenían que estar allí) voy a describir brevemente las conclusiones principales como: 1) No hay una sola o primaria causa de la erosión costera; 2) Debido al calentamiento global, la playa continuará avanzando interior mientras que suben los niveles de mar; 3) La sección más sensible de la costa estudiada es el litoral desde la “marina” al sur hasta Playa Los Almendros, que está erosionando 2 - 3 metros por año; 4) El cierre de la marina no parece haber hecho ningún cambio significativo en el índice de la erosión de esa área; 5) Que la respuesta usual para el ascenso de la playa – la construcción de rompeolas - da lugar a la pérdida permanente de playa dondequiera que se haga.
