testing the Hillsboro Lagoon and Water and Sand on Pompano
Beach.
“ARCHY” is a timeless film that tells the story of 3 very
different generations in surfing. Spanning the 80’s, 90’s,
2000 and on, Archy’s amazing story is one of survival thru
surf stardom at an early age, fame, drugs, alcohol, sponsorships and
the surf rock star lifestyle. Light will finally be shed on the
true-life story of one of the most charismatic and legendary
surfers in history.
Compelling interviews, explosive surf action, timeless photos
matched with Narration by Henry Rollins from the legendary band
Black Flag and set to an all time soundtrack including The
Clash, Social Distortion, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Devo,
and many others, ARCHY is sure to effect audiences of all walks
of life worldwide. This is a story that needs to be told.
The award-winning documentary, narrated by Edward Norton is
a dramatic story of a pivotal time in surfing. During the
winter of 1975 in Hawaii, surfing was shaken to its core. A
group of young surfers from Australia and South Africa
sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to create a
sport, a culture and an industry that is today worth
billions of dollars and has captured the imagination of the
world. With a radical new approach and a brash colonial
attitude, these surfers crashed headlong into culture that
was not ready for revolution.
BUSTIN’ DOWN THE DOOR chronicles a tumultuous two-year
period of competitive and cultural clashes in the
mid-Seventies in surfing's Mecca - Hawaii's North Shore of
Oahu - as a small crew of Australians and South Africans set
out with attitude and determination to change the world of
surfing. Framed around the emerging careers of World
Champions-to-be Shaun Tomson, Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew
and Mark Richards, Bustin’ documents how these young men
risked everything to become the best surfers in the world,
and how their courage and vision began a cultural revolution
that led to the birth of professional surfing and ultimately
what has become today's billion-dollar surf industry.
More than 200 surfers marched across Haulover Bridge on
Saturday, boards held high, to protest a deal between Bal
Harbour officials and a developer that has deprived beach goers
of parking and access to nearby beaches.
These events are free and we even supply the bags and gloves.
They're an easy way to do something good for our beaches and
ocean and to raise public awareness of issues like littering and
protection of our marine resources. Students can receive
community service hours credits for this activity.

Under
an innovative plan approved by the City, parking fees collected
at North Beach are dedicated to funding lifeguard protection.
Twenty-five new, multi-space meters have been installed along
A1A from NE 14th Court to NE 19th Street. This allows the City
to increase public safety at its beach
with no cost passed on to its residents. The City is adding five
new lifeguard towers to the 15 towers currently stationed along
the 2-1/2 mile stretch of beach, and Fort Lauderdale Ocean
Rescue has added eight new certified
lifeguards and appointed two new lieutenants to protect
beachgoers.

Thank you to
everyone that made the 22nd annual International Beach
Cleanup Day a success!
The Cleanup is the first
step in year-round efforts and about finding solutions for the
problem of marine debris, which can kill thousands of wildlife
and fish each year, and damage sensitive underwater habitats.
The Cleanup volunteers also collect information about the items
they find, and this data is given to The Ocean Conservancy,
which compiles and studies the data in order to learn more about
the global debris problem, ways to educate the public, and find
solutions.
WHEN: Saturday, September
15, 2007, from 9 a.m. to noon
WHERE: Thirteen locations throughout Broward County: Deerfield
Beach, Pompano Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Hugh
Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Beach, Fort Lauderdale
South Beach Park, John U. Lloyd State Park, Dania Beach,
Hollywood Beach North, Hollywood Beach Central, Hollywood Beach
South, and Hallandale Beach.
WHY: In 2006, more than 350,000 volunteers worldwide collected
over 7 million pounds of litter and marine debris from the
shores, lakes, and rivers in 66 nations. In Broward County last
year, 1,100 volunteers collected more than 4,000 pounds of
garbage.
Barefoot Wine has partnered with the Surfrider Foundation to
rescue beaches across the country and make them,
"barefoot-friendly". Here in Miami, the Barefoot Wine
Beach Rescue Project is providing much needed resources to
purchase native plants and equipment to revitalize a portion of
our fragile coastal dune system. The only missing ingredient is
you! Get involved and make the beach a better place.
In a two-phase program (June 9th and July 14th), we will remove
harmful exotic species that destabilize the dunes and plant
native ones. Some of which are very rare, found only in South
Florida and nowhere else in the world!
Food and refreshments served, we'll have the Surfrider tent up
to provide shade.
An
added bonus to being part of the Barefoot Wine/Surfrider
partnership to restore our coastal dunes is that participants
receive a VIP pass to the upcoming Barefoot
Wine Beach Rescue Celebration. This is a limited access
event graciously hosted by Quicksilver at their Collins Avenue
Store. Matt
Kechele and a "yet to be disclosed" Quiksilver
Team Rider will be in attendance; along with Jill
Cunniff, lead singer of Luscious Jackson, performing live
(21 or older, ID required to attend).
The beach showers that were removed from
the parking lot and portal at 4500 El Mar Drive in
Lauderdale-By- The- Sea were reinstalled as of 11:30 AM
this morning.
It has taken numerous letters, citizens
comments forms, phone calls and conversations over a
2-3 month period.
We would like to thank the City of
Lauderdale By The Sea, Craig Unger of Minto Builders, the
Broward Sheriff's Office, and residents, Thomas M. Ralph
and Brad Scudder and the Broward County
Chapter Members of Surfrider that helped.

I’m
overjoyed that the Open Beaches Amendment passed
and is awaiting the Governor’s signature I am
deeply bummed that the tremendous amount of work
everyone put into the Clean Oceans Bill couldn’t
overcome the significant hurdles thrown in our
path.
I’m
sorry to say the Clean Oceans Bill died in the
Senate yesterday. It was not picked up for
its final 2 readings and left on the calendar
awaiting consideration when session officially
closed.
Oceans
Day in Tallahassee
By
Mandy Baily
Below the towering gaze of the
State Capitol building, Surfrider members from all
over Florida dropped into Tallahassee on April
18th to encourage our elected officials to support
the Clean Oceans Bill. The overcast morning began
with a slightly bumpy surface: marked by the
slightly daunting task ahead and butterflies in
our bellies as most of us had no previous
experience meeting with Senators and
Representatives.
As the clouds and hours rolled on, the day glassed
off as we learned the nuances of speaking with
officials and their staff. Our message was clear:
"Dumping sewage in the ocean is morally
wrong!" Our voices spoke what our hearts felt
as we distributed information and detailed the
importance for every Senator and Representative to
support the House version of the Clean Ocean Bill.
After a long, draining day of snaking through the
Capitol halls, at times feeling cynical as to how
our government system works; we managed to take
home a sense of empowerment as we recognized that
we are an integral part of that system. As the
state legislature closes for the year on May 4th,
we realize that we must continue to speak up if
the Clean Oceans Bill is to be made into law.
They are listening! Via phone, email, fax, or
office visit there is still time left to contact
your representatives and simply state:
"Dumping sewage in the ocean is morally wrong
– support the Clean Oceans Bill (HB57)".
The waters and coasts that shape our lives depend
on it.

Southeast Regionals
Recap
The Southeast Regional Championships were held April 21-23
at the Inlet at New Smyrna Beach, FL during some great
conditions that held on for the entire contest. As the
first of three Regional Championships, the ESA proudly
welcomed our new presenting national sponsor, Analog. In
conjunction with Red Dog Surf Shop, Analog hosted an
"all you can eat taco buffet" at local hot spot,
Clancy's, for all the competitors and families on Sunday
night. Analog presented the Benji DVD, gave away a ton of
prizes, and a good time was had by all. As the ESA
prepares for the rest of the Championship season, we're
excited about our new national sponsors and their ability
to enhance these venues for not only the competitors, but
for the families and spectators as well.
