Bag Ban Passed on the Big Island, Hawaii

Bag Ban Passed on the Big Island, Hawaii

After years of lobbying the Hawaii County Council, activists on the Big Island were finally able to convince them to pass a ban on plastic bags. Hilo Surfrider member Dr. Hank Carson took a lead in organizing folks to sign petitions and contact their County Council members, and the Hilo and Kona Chapters rallied support for the ban. Then, Surfrider members and activists across Hawaii wrote letters to Mayor Billy Kenoi, asking him sign the bill, which he did on Jan. 16, 2012. The Big Island now joins Maui and Kauai Counties, which have already passed their own bag bans that have been very successful; and Oahu is the only county that doesn't have a bag ban in place.
