Florida Statewide Recycling RAP Effort
Florida generates more than 32 million tons of municipal solid waste annually, almost two tons per resident per year. Today, more than two decades after the Legislature passed Florida's first 30% recycling goal, Floridians collectively recycle only 28% of their waste. The state recycling rate has fluctuated between 24% and 28% since 1998. Currently FL DEP is unable to increase our state's recycling efforts due to House Bill 7135 in 2009. While the bill did set up the 75% Recycling Program by 2020, it however states that the Recommendation Report to be shared with the Legislature in 2010 had to be approved for implementation, which it has not been to date.
