Maryland Bag Bill
The Maryland General Assembly is considering legislation, "Clean the Streams and Beautify the Bay Act of 2011" (HB 1034 and SB 602), that will place a five-cent fee on single-use plastic and paper shopping bags. Like the bag fee in Washington, DC, proceeds of the fee will support restoration of impaired waterways in the state, including the Chesapeake Bay. The DC Chapter has been working hard, along with the Trash Free Maryland Alliance, to find legislative sponsors for the introduction of this bill, to generate public support for single-use bag fees, and to build support in the Assembly to pass this bill.
