No Oil Spills in Washington Waters
Just one major oil spill would devastate the beaches and coastal waters in Washington State. NOAA identified a catastrophic oil spill as the greatest threat to the recovery of endangered resident killer whales. For over a decade, Washington chapters have worked to improve oil spill prevention, preparedness and response programs and policies with an enormous victory in 2009 winning permanent funding for a year-round rescue tug stationed at the mouth of the Strait de Juan Fuca. In 2011, WA chapters are working with coalition partners to pass state legislation that would increase funding for the state's oil spill program and require industry to provide for more adequate response equipment and trained forces of volunteer responders, including commercial fishing vessels.
