Surfer’s Beach Erosion
If you've been to Surfer's Beach in the Princeton/El Granada/Half Moon Bay area, then you know coastal erosion is a serious issue for this stretch of the coast south of Pillar Point Harbor. While Half Moon Bay has been formed as a result of coastal erosion, the current rate of erosion in this area is exacerbated because the sediment that would otherwise naturally supply sand to the beach here is currently trapped in the harbor. This has become a problem for the harbor, causing navigational and access hazards in areas where sediment has built up, and for beach goers due to the loss of historical access (Turkey Overflow parking lot; rip rap rocks along the beach) and the eminent loss of beach. Currently, the Harbor District is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to identify potential solutions to solve these problems. The Surfrider Foundation San Mateo County chapter plans to be engaged as the Army Corps process moves forward and potential projects develop.
