Update the Bottle Bill, Already!

Active | January 01 2010

Plastic Pollution

The Massachusetts Chapter joined a large coalition of groups years ago, aiming to update the Mass bottle deposit law to include non-carbonated beverages, like water bottles.

The current law has an excellent rate of recycling but it only covers beer and soda. A five cent deposit on more types of beverage bottles will mean cleaner oceans, waves, and beaches.  Since the legislature has failed to act on this important bill for over a decade, the people took matters into their own hands!  Under the leadership of MASSPIRG, a citizens initiative was formed and a ballot measure asking Massachusetts voters to approve the Updated Bottle Bill will be on the November, 2014 ballot.  Unfortunately, the campaign to squash the Update was able to bamboozle the public into believeing in their propaganda, and the measure failed to pass.

But the fight continues.

The Chapter needs YOU to get involved to help keep plastic marine debris off our beaches and out of the ocean!  Join in an event or come to a meeting - get involved today!

Plastic Pollution

Rise Above Plastics is designed to eliminate the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics.
