Welcome to DC Surfrider

photo of sign warning of combined sewer overflowEach year, over 25,000 beaches in the United States are closed or posted as unhealthy [source: www.surfrider.org]. To remedy this, Barefoot Wine and Surfrider Foundation encourage local residents to volunteer at cleanup and restoration events across the country to help make these beaches "barefoot-friendly."

The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project is back for its third straight year, and this time it's bigger than ever! In celebration of Surfrider Foundation's 25th Anniversary, Barefoot Wine and the Surfrider Foundation are rescuing, renewing, and restoring 25 beaches this summer.

The Washington, DC event will be held on Saturday, July 18, at Hains Point at 10 am. We'll meet near the parking lot by the playground, right at the point itself. Surfrider will provide all bags and gloves--just come dressed for the outdoors (and don't forget the sunblock!). REI is providing refreshments. No need to register in advance--we'll see you there!

This cleanup is family friendly--bring a picnic and make a day of it! You do not have to be a Surfrider member to participate. Please invite co-workers, sports teams, community groups, and other friends!

There will be a celebration event following the cleanup, from 3 to 5 pm at Hard Rock Cafe, 999 E Street NW. Volunteers age 21 and up are invited to enjoy complimentary wine and bubbly courtesy of Barefoot Wines, and free apps from Hard Rock. Giveaways and info from Barefoot and Surfrider will also be available.
