Welcome to DC Surfrider
Students get their hands dirty while learning about the watershed.

It’s easy to say that streams turn into rivers, and rivers turn into oceans, but seeing it happen brings the watershed concept to life.

Respect the Beach, Surfrider’s educational program, brings chapter members and watershed models into the classroom to teach students about how water alters geography and how pollution inland ultimately affects the coastal environment. Using simple interactive models, students create rivers and towns to explore different types of erosion and pollution.

The program can be presented in one or more sessions, and tailored to different age groups and curriculum goals. (We recommend that elementary school sessions last no more than one hour.) DC Surfrider provides all models and materials. We can also provide Sea to Summit, a 19-minute video about the hydrologic cycle, for use before or during the session.
