As part of an enduring bipartisan effort and after years of advocacy by the environmental community, Congress passed the Harmful Algal Bloom (HABs) and Hypoxia Research Control Amendment Act of 2014. This bill directs NOAA to research and devise a response plan to the potentially toxic blooms.

The Obama Administration is beginning development of an offshore oil and gas leasing plan for 2017 - 2022. A public comment period is now open until August 15th.

Congress has passed an updated Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA) which authorizes coastal restoration and engineering projects. Surfrider chapters worked hard to improve the final version of the bill.

A bill to protect the right of a homeowner to plant climate-appropriate landscaping just got a step closer to the governor's desk. Surfrider initiated a sign-on letter, signed by 10 enviro non-profits, in support of the bill.

A California state agency is launching 7 short films on how to prevent runoff from landscapes and hard surfaces. The objective is essentially Ocean Friendly Gardens!

This spring, Ken Campbell, hailing from the South Sound Surfrider Chapter, undertook a 150-mile journey around the Puget Sound to raise awareness of plastic pollution in the ocean. His entire journey was made aboard a kayak he crafted by hand from discarded single-use plastic bottles.

The San Luis Obispo SLO BWTF began 2013 as a small water testing program with two volunteers who conducted weekly sampling at two sites. Throughout the year, the Chapter’s BWTF Coordinator built a team of dedicated water samplers and testers that are out monitoring eleven sites on a weekly basis.
