On July 8, 2017, the Surfrider Foundation hosted the first of two annual Two Coasts One Ocean bi-coastal fundraisers in Montauk, New York, to support the shared, environmental responsibilities of keeping our water clean and our beaches healthy.
Supporters gathered at the sold out event to raise critical funds that will ensure Surfrider’s work along the East Long Island coastline and to amplify on-the-ground efforts by our volunteer network to monitor, test, educate and ensure public health through the water quality program, Blue Water Task Force. Support from the event will also contribute to our Ocean Friendly Gardens program, which was established to reduce water pollution and runoff at the source. Professional surfer and filmmaker Mikey DeTemple created a short film for the event, Into the Sea, to highlight these efforts to protect clean water and healthy beaches.
Notable guests of Two Coasts One Ocean in Montauk include Cynthia Rowley, David Neville, Gucci Westman Neville, Peter Davis, Rachelle Hruska & Sean MacPherson and surfers Tony Caramanico, Will Skudin, Quincy Davis, Balaram Stack and Patrick Schmidt. In a beautiful, waterfront setting the evening included a cocktail hour with silent auction and the musical stylings of DJ May Kwok, a gourmet seated dinner with a fundraising program and an initiatives update by Surfrider's CEO, Chad Nelsen, followed by music and festivities amplified by a soulful DJ performance by the emerging artist Sinkane.
After a successful fundraising appeal and auction, the celebration continued with a toast to our amazing activists who make our work possible. Portraits of 40 Surfrider volunteers and activists were artfully projected throughout the venue and caught the attention of everyone in attendance. The bold images fortified the message that our work and mission is made possible by the hard work and dedication of individual change makers. We are grateful for the opportunity to highlight their efforts and raise awareness for how everyone can play a role in protecting what they love.
