Two Coasts One Ocean Los Angeles

On September 16, 2017, the Surfrider Foundation hosted the third annual Two Coasts One Ocean event in Los Angeles to support the shared, environmental responsibilities of keeping our water clean and our beaches healthy with a special focus on the rising threat of plastic pollution.

At the home of Jay Griffith, renowned landscape designer, supporters came together for an inspiring evening that connected Surfrider's national mission to protect our ocean, waves and beaches with simple habit changes guests could make in their everyday lives to ensure clean water and healthy beaches. Drawing out everyone's inner activist, the local Los Angeles Surfrider Chapter collected guest signatures on a Firewire surfboard that will be presented to local government officials to demand attention and action on a recently rejected polystyrene ban.

With sweeping canyon views and handcrafted cocktails at the Don Q Rum bar, the night was complete with a seated family style dinner and an acoustic set by up and coming recording artist, Ethan Tucker and performance by DJ MAXV. The program included a captivating presentation of recent coastal victories and a video that captures affirming statements of Surfrider activists who carry out out our mission on a daily basis, which can be viewed here. Another highlight was the collection of 10 custom handshaped surfboards, all in Surfrider colors and each with a unique “Clean Water Healthy Beaches” inlay to compliment the event theme.

We bookend the summer with the bicoastal Two Coasts One Ocean events, starting in Montauk, New York and closing in Los Angeles, California, celebrating the strength of our network the whole way through. These two locations are home to Surfrider volunteer activists who lead priority campaigns and defend their community's right to healthy beaches. The events enable us to infuse financial support, build and foster local relationships and raise awareness that will strengthen our cause and the 2017 proceeds will continue to unite efforts on both coasts to save waterways, reduce pollution and protect beaches for this and future generations.
