Feeding plastic to the birds
October 06 2010 | Plastics, Jim's Blog,
Ocean trash ends up lots of different places, including the mouths of birds.
More than 1,000,000 sea birds die every single year from ingesting plastic
. A million.
This, like so many statistics, is abstract. So on some level it fails to inform and inspire.
What isn't abstract is looking into the carcass of a sea bird and seeing plastic
. I remember the first time I saw one of these. The fleeting thought in my mind was "how did this bird come to eat a lighter?" Of course the answer is simple... it was looking for food.
The call to action is simple. Start small, pledge to yourself to never take a single-use plastic bag at the grocery store again. Refuse a single-use water bottle and wait for a glass of water. Ocean trash isn't an abstract problem... it's right in front of our faces... and unfortunately also right in front of birds' faces.
