Paul Jenkin, Rockstar? Hayduke?
December 09 2007 | Jim's Blog,
The term rockstar is overused and yet it's the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Paul Jenkin. For me that term has an positive angle when applied to rockers that use their fame/notoriety/cache as currency that can be applied to a worthy cause.
I'm a Abbey fan... love Hayduke lore.. and yet I think that comparison also comes with enough bad/odd baggage to not work. After all, Paul has devoted a decade of his life working with the proper channels (and expects to devote another decade)... this isn't a cut-to-the-chase, gimme-a-wrench Hayduke deal.
Somehow to me Paul is bigger than both... he not a myth or surrounded by hype. He is a real, living, day-to-day working activist. I'd go so far as to say he's icon-in-the-making. Activists like Paul Jenkin deserve massive public acclaim... and yet they expect (and get) virtually none.
Never heard of Paul? He is the leading force behind a campaign to bring the Ventura watershed, the entire ecosystem, very closely back to it's original state.
