Plastic Beach, Hawaii

April 18 2011 | Beaches, Plastics,

The southernmost tip of the United States is Kamilo Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. It's a place that few see as it's hard to get to and off the beaten track. That said, more plastic ends up on this beach than arguably any other beach in the United States. Thus it's moniker "Plastic Beach."

Steve Blank and Stuart Coleman, both Surfrider staffers, were there last week with a reporter from Civil Beat. Below is a slideshow of the horrific plastics on this beach. Note: A large-scale beach cleanup had happened two weeks prior, Hawaii Wildlife Fund have cleaned up 130 tons of debris since 2003.
