The clean visual proof that single-use bag fees work

March 30 2010 | Plastics, Jim's Blog,

As you may remember, last year Washington DC implemented a 5 cent per bag fee for single-use plastic bags.

Money, as if we needed a reminder, is the ultimate motivator.

The January 2010 numbers are in and bag use is down, waaaaaaaaay down.
If the massive reduction in single-use plastic bag pollution isn't enough. The fees raised, $150K thus far, is ear-marked to be spent on clean up of the nearly and heavily polluted Anacostia River.

As much as the phrase "win win" has always bugged me. It sure seems to apply here.

Kudos to the Washington DC Chapter on this.
