The Sea is at Risk of Becoming Uninhabitable

Below is an ad for Surfrider Europe by the clever creatives at Young & Rubicam Paris.

When I look at this ad, I see a visual mash-up... octopus somewhere in a lush jungle, wait... that's not right. The copy suggests that the octopus is no longer in the oceans because they are inhabitable.

We all react differently to ads like this. Some people might say "oh, those enviros... over-reaching again" and others might say "I'm glad we have some smart people on the side of the ocean, it needs all the help it can get."

The truth, and there is truth and not just opinion, is that our oceans are under seige. Fisheries are collapsing while developing nations sprint towards greater consumption. Plastic outnumbers plankton 5:1 north of Hawaii in a zone compared to one of the largest states in the U.S.

It's not all fine and dandy out there in the big blue.

Me... I'm on the side of the spectrum that is stoked that the brains at Y&R; Paris are plugging into this effort.

How about you?
