US cities that have risen above plastics

October 20 2009 | Plastics, Jim's Blog,

A few years ago we teamed up with Jack Johnson and took the Rise Above Plastics idea on the road. We took it to four continents and a whole lot of stops (thanks to Jack for underwriting this).

Fast forward to today and the Rise Above Plastics push continues on.

Here is our working list for plastic bag bans in US cities:
Maui, HI
Kauai, HI
Manhattan Beach, CA
Malibu, CA
San Jose, CA
San Francisco, CA
Palo Alto, CA
Fairfax, CA
Edmonds, WA

Westport, CT
Bethel, Alaska
Outer Banks, NC (3 counties pilot project)
Washington, DC (bag fee)

At the larger level we are working alongside other groups to drive changes at the state-level. States considering plastic bag bans or fees: CA, HI, OR, WA, FL, NC, CT

And of course there are several other cities working on or finalizing bans or fees: Seattle, Portland, Encinitas, Santa Monica, Santa Clara County, Ocean City, etc...

Thanks to all of you who are working in your local communities on these ordinances and to Rise Above Plastics. Please comment on this and let me know if I've missed any cities in the US.
