Surfrider has many ongoing projects and activities that have a unique and local impact on our national mission: the preservation and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. Each one also offers opportunities for members to get involved in carrying out the Surfrider mission, regardless of your level of education or experience.
Current Projects
Blue Water Task Force
The Kauai Chapter has recently launched a water quality campaign that will be testing six different north shore surf zones. Hanalei Point or “The Bowl”, Pinetrees, Middles, Waikoko’s, Kalihiwai Point, and Rock Quarries will all be tested once a month for water turbidity, salinity, and Enterococus Bacteria (a fecal waste indicator). All samples will be collected the second saturday of each month, before 9 AM and results will be announced the following day. Sample collectors are needed and no prior experience is required other than the ability to paddle out to the surf zone being sampled. If interested and would like to find out more about the program, please contact program coordinator Paul Tannenbaum @ (808)828-1147 or paultannenbaum@gmail.com.
Surfrider Net Patrol
As many of you know, our beaches receive an incredible amount of ocean debris. During past beach clean-ups we have encountered massive net entanglements. As a result, we have created a separate task force to tackle marine debris. Once a month, the chapter dispatches Net Patrol to remove one of these piles. This task force is just being started and needs all the help they can get. If you would like to become part of the Surfrider Net Patrol, or would like to report a net pile, please contact program coordinator Barbara Wiedner @ (808)635-2593 or bwiednerrealtor@aol.com. Click Here to read an article on Net Patrol’s efforts on Kauai’s East Shore.
Beach Clean-ups
Once a month, our chapter gets together and cleans up one of Kauai’s beautiful beaches. Beach clean-ups are always held on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and the time and date of the upcoming cleanup is posted on our home page. Gloves, trash-bags, and other clean-up equipment is provided. Each person needs to bring water, sunscreen, and closed-toed shoes. If interested and would like to find out more information, please contact program coordinator Sheri Saari @ (808)652-4648 or sherisaari@gmail.com
