Get involved!
This is a grassroots effort, and it relies heavily on volunteers who donate money,
time, physical resources and services like design, printing and distribution of flyers,
etc.
Here's what we're currently looking for:
Business services:
The Breakwater Task Force has embarked on a multi-faceted campaign to reconfigure the
breakwater. If your business can help, we will accept tax-deductible donations, services
or merchandise. Surfrider is a registered non-profit environmental organization.
The Task Force is always producing publicity information in the form of handouts,
mailings and informational videos. If your business can help with the production of these
projects, your help is most welcome.
Volunteers
The Breakwater Task Force is organized into many subcommitteess which reflect the many
facets of this campaign. If you have a particular strength or interest, you may find an
opportunity to pursue your personal goals and help the Task Force at the same time. Our
subcommittees are looking for volunteers to help with the following:
- Booth events: Greet the public, hand out literature and answer
questions about the project.
- Historical research: Help us document the glory days of Long
Beach's shoreline before the breakwater, and document the how and why of the building of
the breakwater. Help us find historical photos and articles of the beach in Long Beach
prior to 1949 or during the building of the breakwater. It's important that the we have
the appropriate permisson to republish the photos -- we can't simply copy them from
publications of the time unless the copyright's expired or we are granted rights.
- Scientific research: There are many questions to be answered
with regard to water quality, public health, habitat, species diversity and mitigation
value.
- Entertainment production: Surfrider enjoys a very beneficial
relationship with local musicians. Help organize public concerts and nightclub gigs to
raise funds and awareness.
- Media/public relations
- Political relations
- Corporate relations
- Volunteer coordinators
- Multimedia productions
Above all, don't be afraid to suggest your own ideas on how you can help or contribute.
This project belongs to you, too!
