MAKING WAVES
DONATE Surfrider

#CrudeAwakening
To drive awareness for legislation that will help prevent oil drilling, improve response procedures, require automatic shutoff technology and increase safety procedures, Surfrider and Patagonia held a “paddle out” to an oil platform off Santa Barbara on August 22. May’s spill north of Santa Barbara was a sad reminder of how destructive oil can be to our ocean and coastline – to this day an excessive amount of oil slicks can be seen on the water in the area. If you want to voice your opinion, send a letter to your elected officials – as more people speak up, the more impact we’ll have.

Sewage Spills in Hawaii
Environmental groups are asking Hawaii to reevaluate its wastewater systems after two recent incidents sent untreated or partially treated wastewater out to sea. One of the spills is being attributed to a heavy storm that overloaded the only functioning pump (the second pump was offline due to construction). The beaches are now open, but always check reports to ensure conditions are safe for swimming and surfing – we need to protect our ocean, beaches, marine life and our health too.

Protect the Turtles!
In early August, Surfrider joined the Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club and Florida Wildlife Federation in the filing of a formal notice of intent to sue the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for authorizing construction of seawalls that destroy the nesting habitat of endangered sea turtles. The reptiles can’t defend their homes, so we will.

Celebrating Chelsea Collins
Western Washington University grad Chelsea Collins proves you can make a difference no matter how young you are. As part of the Northwest Straits chapter, Chelsea has worked on water quality through the chapter’s Blue Water Task Force program and has been involved in laboratory work too – basically she’s done it all. We’re thankful for her efforts and know she’ll continue to make a difference for our environment.

Coastal Clean-Up Day Is Approaching – Are You In?
The annual International Coastal Cleanup day is on September 19th. Did you know that 60-80% of beach debris comes from land-based sources? This debris can be deadly to sea turtles, sea birds and marine mammals. Let’s make a difference and work together to pick up millions of pounds of trash littering our coastlines – last year we cleared more than 16 million pounds of trash. Find a chapter near you and get cleaning on the 19th!
