One person can make a difference! Glenn "old n cold" Stockwell, former Surfrider National Board member, has just accessed Surfrider's first Earth Share campaign! Just in case you don't know the significance or what the heck I am talking about, Earth Share is a federation of the nation's leading environmental organizations, created solely for the purpose of raising employee-giving funds for groups, like the Surfrider Foundation. An Earth Share campaign runs much like a United Way campaign, in which a portion of your paycheck can benefit either all groups represented by Earth Share or one individual group; we suggest you pick the Surfrider Foundation.
The Surfrider Foundation became a member of Earth Share in late 1997 and has been struggling to get chapter activists involved in this opportunity as well as attempting to interest the surf industry in including an Earth Share campaign at their workplace. However, we have been unsuccessful in accessing any new accounts for the federation until now. Stockwell has recently established an Earth Share campaign at the College of the Redwoods to run in conjunction with their United Way campaign. Glenn has been a Surfrider member since 1989 and joined the local Humboldt Chapter when it was first chartered. Glenn served as Vice-Chairman and as Chairman on Surfrider's National Board of Directors. During his Board tenure he negotiated the arrangement with Louisiana Pacific and Simpson that allowed the money from the North Jetty settlement to go to the Humboldt Area Foundation where the interest subsidizes projects which seek to guarantee access, water quality, education and improved marine and aquatic recreation in the Humboldt Bay region. In addition, he had officials from Louisiana Pacific agree to make two separate donations of chlorine free paper which were used to publish a number of issues of MAKING WAVES. Since leaving the National Board, Glenn has done some volunteer work for the local chapter and served as liaison between the chapter and the Surfrider national staff. Besides being really old, Glenn still surfs, is fun around the campfire, is a Scorpio and continues his commitment by attempting to keep other past national Board members involved in the Surfrider Foundation's issues. If you would like to be like Glenn and create an Earth Share campaign at your workplace, call John Hoskinson at 1-800-743-SURF. If have someone you would like to spotlight in the next issue of MAKING WAVES, please send contactinformation and a picture of the volunteer to: Power of One, 122 S. El Camino Real, PMB #67, San Clemente,California 92672. Please don't forget to include their zodiac sign! |
