The Orange County 2000 Club gathered for a private event on November 21, 2002 at The Camp
in Costa Mesa.
The evening's highlights included an impassioned speech by Chris Evans, commending the
club for its tremendous support of the Surfrider Foundation. Evans
briefly outlined several of the victories that the Foundation produced over the past year,
including those at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, Tres Palmas, Puerto Rico, the effort stop to
the 301(h) waiver in Orange County, California, the establishment of a new National Marine
Sanctuary in the Channel Islands.
Paul Naudé, CEO of Billabong, USA and longtime supporter of the Surfrider Foundation,
addressed the audience as well, stressing the importance of having the surf industry support
the Surfrider Foundation, pointing out the direct connection of a healthy ocean environment
to the success of the industry. Naudé also commended Surfline for their membership
program with Surfrider, which has produced close to 1600 new members for Surfrider to
date. Naudé concluded his speech with a strong appeal for the surf industry to become
involved with Surfrider, either through corporate donations, participation in the hangtag
program, or through Earthshare; an employee giving opportunity that yields tremendous
support to Surfrider and costs companies nothing.
After the presentations, the 2000 Club members and their guests were treated to the music
of Donavan Frankenreiter and his band, while enjoying a delicious sampling of unique appetizers
which were catered by Memphis restaurant.
"The formation of the 2000 Club was a tremendous success in terms of the support," said
Kim Novick, Surfrider Foundation's Director of Development. "We will be focusing
on the continued growth of the Orange County Club, while cultivating the new 2000 Clubs
in Santa Barbara and Silicon Valley."
Special thanks to Paul Naudé and the Billabong crew for supporting and hosting this special
evening.
