Dear MW,
I've been a member of Surfrider for about 10 years now. While I've enjoyed receiving and reading the Making Waves newsletter, I think you should offer an on-line version for those members who use the internet. I would think you could count on a significant percentage of members to opt for this version since it is far less destructive to the environment. And face it, once you've read the newsletter there isn't much to do with it other than throw it away. Surfrider will have to print far less material and back issues could be easily accessible for years to come.

Dear John,
The Surfrider Foundation has actually been publishing Making Waves online since 1998. It can be found online at www.surfrider.org/programs/makingwaves.htm. What's more, Making Waves Online features plenty of bonus material not available in the printed version, including expanded coverage, movie and book reviews, lifestyle articles and web resources for our activists. For those members who wish to discontinue receiving the printed version of Making Waves in favor of going online, simply call us at 800-743-SURF or drop us an email at info@surfrider.org. For those members who still enjoy receiving Making Waves in the mail, we hope that you choose to pass along your issue (and the attached membership application) to a friend after you're finished.
Dear MW,
On page 2 of the February Making Waves, you decry the lack of women in Congress. I couldn't agree with you more. I am hoping I will live long enough to see the first woman president. However, your data is off. I do not know the number of women in Congress in 2003, however, in the 92nd Congress (71-73), there were two in the Senate and 13 in the House for a grand total of 15. In the 93rd, there were 0 in the Senate and 16 in the House. This is even worse than the picture you presented. Obviously, in the following 30 years, the Senate still has its maximum number of 100, but I wonder how much larger the House has grown. This is a sad situation. Compared to Arab countries it is paradise for women. However, for such an ñenlightenedî country as ours, IT STINKS. One good aspect is that, assuming there are now around 70 women in the Congress, this is a 400% increase in 30 years. It would be interesting to see a graph of the number of women in Congress over the past 50 years. I hope and feel there is a very noticeable ascension of the line away from the horizontal axis. Thanks for your article. It was obviously thought provoking.
