Rincňn, Puerto Rico Following their victory in stopping the development of several beachfront resorts in their area, the Surfrider Foundation’s Rincon Chapter is now working in conjunction with other community groups to convince Puerto Rico’s legislature to establish the “Reserva Natural Marina Tres Palmas” or the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, which will assist in protecting one of the last healthy expanses of elkhorn coral in the Caribbean.

Channel Islands, California For several years, the Surfrider Foundation’s Ventura, Santa Barbara and Isla Vista Chapters have been working to persuade the California State Department of Fish and Game and Pacific Fisheries Management Council establish “no take” marine reserves within portions of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The Channel Islands supports several species of endangered fish and wildlife, including Black Sea Bass, Abalone, Brown Pelicans and Blue Whales.

Olympic Peninsula, Washington The Olympic National Park occupies 65 miles of wilderness coastline on the outer coast of the Olympic peninsula. As part of its current General Management Plan revision process, the Park is considering establishment of coastal marine protected areas through implementation of a network of intertidal reserves that limit harvest and promote marine education and research. Local Surfrider Foundation activists have generated over 3000 letters faxes and phone call to the superintendent voicing their support for conservation of this special area.
