Wild Elephant Anyone?

"He who mounts a wild elephant goes where the wild elephant goes" - Randolph Bourne

I rode an elephant once. It wasn't very wild and it didn't take me on a particularly wild ride, but it was nevertheless an awe-inspiring creature, and I felt certain sunset photothat were it to choose to take me on a wild ride, there wasn't much I could have done about it other than to have held on tightly. Not too inaccurate a metaphor for being a Surfrider Foundation activist. And sometimes those rides last decades, white knuckles the entire time. Just ask the Jersey Shore chapter (or read about it on page four). This past year has most certainly been a wild elephant ride for the Surfrider Foundation, and I don't imagine we're going to get much opportunity to let go next year either. Is the ride worth it? Of course it is. Just reading through the Chapter Year End Wrap-Up starting on page four, is enough to inspire anyone for another year of wild rides. As most of us have learned, wild rides can be exhilarating, and the view is often stupendous. Fortunately for us, Surfrider Foundation members, like elephants, are patient, thick-skinned, and long-lived. We also love water, will travel many miles to return to our favorite "watering holes" and are pretty good at looking out for our own. Which brings me to a small but telling story about the greater Surfrider herd.

Scott, a friend of mine from Santa Cruz called a while back to see if I knew anyone in San Diego who might be able to let him leave his car parked at their house for a week. Scott was driving down to San Diego, and then flying with his boards to Mexico. Icould not find anyone to help him, but then had a thought. I told him, "Hey, you're a Surfrider Foundation member, call the San Diego chapter and ask around, you never know." Hours later he called me back. Not only had he found a place to leave his car, he'd been offered a place to stay and a ride to the airport. That speaks volumes of what this organization is all about. We look out for our own. We are an instant family, with a common history of challenges, setbacks, and our fair share of victories. So this issue is our yearbook, a record of our challenges and how we faced them. That Surfrider Foundation logo on the bumper of our car is a proud family crest. We have relatives all over the world, brothers and sisters in arms, and wherever there is one of us ready to take a stand, there we all are.

Let's keep growing the family. Your generous donations of time, energy, enthusiasm and dollars are especially needed now, to keep the momentum going into the new year. Please come along again on the wild ride.
