Partners in Membership: Surfline and the Surfrider Foundation By Jenna Oldfield The Surfrider Foundation currently has over 37,000 members across the United States. This astounding number cannot solely be attributed to our own outreach efforts. We have extraordinary partners helping us to increase our membership and share our vision of a conscientious ocean ethic. For example, prospective and current members can sign up for magazine subscriptions to Surfer, Longboard, SG and Surfer's Path in addition to their Surfrider Foundation memberships. Not only do new and renewing members receive a yearly subscription to these remarkable publications, but they also receive premiums such as Reef sandals, Billabong
t-shirts and exclusive videos or DVD's.
One of the Surfrider Foundation's noteworthy partners is the leading provider of surf reports and forecast information, Surfline. Surfline's president and chief surf forecaster, Sean Collins was the first person to forecast swells accurately on a regular basis in the late ‘70s and early 80's. He pioneered and created the first ongoing surf forecast available to the surfing public in 1985. In fact, Surfline.com is visited by over 50,000 unique people per day and nearly 1,000,000 per month. Additionally, the surf forecasts can be sent via phone, fax, wireless web and the Internet. We are tremendously grateful to Surfline for their support and collaboration. The Surfrider Foundation's relationship with Surfline has generated over 2500 members in 2003 alone. This alliance allowed the Surfrider Foundation to extend our vision of conserving and protecting our oceans, waves and beaches to potential supporters and future "keepers of the coast". We look forward to many years of partnership, in which the Surfrider Foundation endeavors to protect the very waves that Surfline flawlessly forecasts. To renew your membership to the Surfrider Foundation with a Surfline membership or with any other of our extraordinary partners go to http://www.surfrider.org under the "Join Surfrider" menu. |
PT Cruiser Owners Party to Support Surfrider Foundation Woodies have long been synonymous with surfing. However, on a cool Saturday afternoon this past November, a whole new generation of car owners were indoctrinated into surf culture as the Surfrider Foundation, along with several thousand PT Cruiser owners, came together in Pomona, California for Daimler Chrysler's PT Cruiser Block Party. The event, which brought together PT Cruiser owners and enthusiasts from across the country, featured an exhibit of custom PT Cruisers, as well as free concert by Rare Earth, The Association, Three Dog Night and others. The event also featured a benefit raffle which included a chance to win an all expense paid visit to the Paskowitz Surf Camp, as well as the grand prize, a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible, courtesy of Chrysler Financial. All proceeds from the raffle, totaling $10,000, were donated to the Surfrider Foundation. "Chrysler Financial is proud to support such a great environmental cause where education is the foundation for teaching fellow citizens about the threats to our coastal environments," said Dietmar Exler, Vice President Brands Marketing for Daimler Chrysler Services.
The Surfrider Foundation was also presented a additional check for $10,000 from the Daimler Chrysler Fund, a non-profit entity that works to make a positive, lasting difference in the communities and environments in which they do business, in recognition of outstanding contributions that Surfrider Foundation has made through its Respect The Beach educational campaign. "We can't thank Chrysler Financial and the Daimler Chrysler Fund enough for their generosity," said Christopher Evans, Executive Director of the Surfrider Foundation USA. Evans spent the afternoon touring the PT Block Party event. "It's exciting to see so many people enthusiastic about their PT Cruisers," Evans said, as he stopped to look at one of the display cars which had been customized to look like a old fashioned woodie, complete with surfboard. "That's exactly how our members and activists feel about oceans, waves and beaches." * * *
