| Endless Journey "This is the neatest group of people I've ever worked with. They're all exceptionally bright, but more importantly, they share a quality about the way they look at life, which is that the journey is the reward." - Steve Jobs, 1984 There's another anniversary this year other than ours. It's the 20th anniversary of the MacIntosh computer. I
happen to be typing this sentence on one. Making Waves is designed
and produced on a MacIntosh computer. What Steve Jobs said above
about the team that created the first Mac could easily have been
said by Tom Pratte or Glenn Hening in 1984, or by Chris Evans
in 2004though I can't honestly say I've heard Mr. Evans ever
use the word neat in that context. Surfrider Foundation people might not always be neat, but they do tend to be exceptionally bright, and I know for a fact that we really do share a quality about the way we look at life, which is that the journey is the reward. We're working on some major long-term goals here, and we had sure as heck better be journey-based types. It's a long and hard road saving things like oceans, waves and beaches. As a category, they don't tend to sit still very well. And neither do those who seek to diminish them. So those of us who choose to work to protect them are in for a long journey. So what? Like Apple, Surfrider Foundation isn't aiming for the entire market share. We just want the loyal, passionate ones, the committed ones, and okay, yes, the slightly crazy ones. Crazy enough to actually leave the beach and go fight for it in a city council chamber; or to sit inside writing a letter to their local paper; or to visit a school to talk about watersheds; or to divert some precious personal dollars to help fight the good fight. And despite many major victories in our twenty year journey, we do this knowing our reward isn't likely to come tomorrow, or that maybe we won't even get to see it with our own eyes. But our children will. And that will be our anniversary. Glenn Hening spoke of this passion in one of the first issues of Making Waves. He said: Being caught inside is where wave-riders learn the meaning of the words challenge, commitment and courage. There are no guarantees and no instant rewards. Judging currents and rips ... the heart-stopping sight of huge lines outside ... barely escaping wave after wave, only to find yourself in the impact zone of an outside setthese are the experiences that build true character. Thanks to all who came before, and those to come. And to those presently in the impact zone. It's all about the journey, and a few victories along the way. Trying to set a good example has never been more challengingor more fun. -Joe Mozdzen
