Surfrider Foundation Summit October 15, 16, 17, 2004 Costa Mesa, California |
|
| After 20 years of coastal environmental battles, we are left with a glorious by-product: 60 U.S. chapters and over 37,000 members ready to protect a coastal heritage for future generations. Through the work of activists, donors, volunteer Board members and dedicated staffers, our founders' dreams of creating a voice for surf and the coastal ocean, exists and thrives today. It is time to celebrate our success, reflect on our history and anticipate our future challenges. We will be marking this important occasion with an educational and networking event on October 15, 16 and 17, 2004, with the Surfrider Foundation Summit at the Hilton Hotel in Costa Mesa, California. The Summit is an opportunity to bring our 60 chapters from across the United States and Puerto Rico together to learn from experts, as well as each other, about activism and mission-related topics. We are pleased to present Dr. Sylvia Earle as the keynote speaker for the Saturday dinner reception. Dr. Earle, a marine biologist sometimes known as "Her Deepness" or "The Sturgeon General", has been an explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society since 1998. Named Time magazine's first "hero for the planet" in 1998, Earle has pioneered research on marine ecosystems and has led more than 50 expeditions totaling more than 6,000 hours underwater. The agenda for the Summit is designed to encourage and facilitate interactions among chapter members and activists, along with subject matter experts to help train and educate for the next 20 years of Surfrider Foundation advocacy. Surfrider Foundation will be providing each chapter with five passes for the Summit weekend as well as one hotel room per chapter for two nights. Please contact Ed Mazzarella for more details. Registration fees are $25 for members and $50 for non-members (includes membership fee) before September 30th. Prices will increase after September 30th. Space is limited.
