The Johnstons and Pierce Flynn
Harriet and Bruce Johnston and Pierce Flynn
Surfrider's Supporters. Thanks!

MAKING WAVES, June/July 1998

Way to Go Bruce!

Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys has helped the Surfrider Foundation raise over $100,000 for The Beach Boys Urgent Action Fund of the Surfrider Foundation. The first priority, urgent challenge was to take on the U.S. Marine Corps' breach of public trust in our efforts to protect and preserve Trestles/San Mateo Point in San Clemente, California. Bruce Johnston and his wife Harriet are tremendous Surfrider Foundation advocates.
And our special thanks go to Surfer's Journal, Longboard Magazine and Surfer Magazine for helping us raise over $53,000 and to the nearly 1,000 new supporters who recently sent in their generous membership gifts. The Surfrider Foundation simply would not be able to tackle urgent challenges without your special support. And our thanks also go to those supporters who initially helped us kick off The Beach Boys Urgent Action Fund of the Surfrider Foundation in December 1997 with their leadership gifts:

Prince Joao de Orleans e Braganca President of the Board of Surfrider Foundation Brazil Visits California for the First Time

In March 1998 Prince Joao of Brazil, president of the board of the Surfrider Foundation in Brazil, and his lovely wife Princess Stella visited California for the first time. Thanks to the generosity of Maile and Fernando Aguerre of Reef Brazil and the International Surfing Association, a wonderful dinner was hosted for them in Newport Beach, California. We were also doubly honored to have as our guests Brazilian Consul General Jorio Gama and Deputy Consul General Rubem Barbosa. Surfrider Brazil was presented with a $5,000 check to help further the Surfrider Foundation Brazil's efforts by Pierce Flynn, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Surfrider Foundation. Pictured L-R: Maile and Fernando Aguerre of Reef Brazil and the International Surfing Association, Princess Stella and Prince Joao of Brazil, Brazilian Consul General Jorio Gama and Deputy Consul General Rubem Barbosa; Pierce Flynn, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Surfrider Foundation; and Cadu Villela, Executive Director of the International Surfing Association.
