Surfrider Chapter News MAKING WAVES, Oct./Nov. 1998 |
For more info contact: Ed Mazzarella at (949) 492-8170, emazzarella@surfrider.org Santa Cruz Chapter Surfrider Foundation was one of only ninety environmental organizations invited to participate in the 1998 National Oceans Conference in Monterey, California. Surfrider Foundation's Executive Director, Dr. Pierce Flynn and President Mark Cousineu, were joined by Santa Cruz Chapter representatives Howard McGee and Gary Pezzi, for this gathering of oceanographic researchers, environmental organizations, politicians and the President and Vice President of the United States. Not only did the Santa Cruz Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation attend and participate in this three day event, they also staff the Surfrider Foundation booth at the Oceans Fair. The Oceans Fair was the part of the Conference that was open to the public. The Surfrider Foundation booth was the "magnet on the fridge" with people from other groups heaping praise on both the Surfrider Foundation organization and our Santa Cruz Chapter. They even had a separate table for all the awards and proclamations given to us. Chapter members spoke to and met many people interested in helping to protect and preserve our coastal resources. Chapter representative Boots McGee, commented on the many young students interested in looking for ways to expand their ocean horizons. All-in-all the 1998 National Oceans Conference was a great success for the Surfrider Foundation Organization. The Surfrider Foundation was invited because of the science based environmental work that we have been doing over10 years. This work could not of been possible if not for the dedication of our grassroots chapter activists who have made a commitment to protecting and preserving our coastal resources. San Mateo County Chapter People interested in helping the local coastal environment, preserving beach access and educating others on the joys and benefits of the ocean should contact the new San Mateo County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. The chapter formed six months ago under the leadership of Half Moon Bay resident and surf photographer Doug Acton and a group of friends. Chapter meetings are being held at the Montara Lighthouse once a month. In addition to chapter business and updates on local and nation issues the meetings have featured keynote speakers, slide shows and video presentations. Surfrider Foundation's San Mateo County Chapter is working on several different areas to help the local community and coastline. Members are working to implement a water testing program. Currently local authorities post warnings when a known pollution spill occurs, but frequently other sources of contamination go undetected, unnoticed or unannounced-until someone turns up sick. In addition to conducting beach clean ups the chapter has under took the stenciling of storm drains in the cities of El Granada, Moss Beach and Montara. The stenciling identifies storm drains that run directly to the ocean and warn people not dump hazards materials into them. The Surfrider Foundation is happy to welcome this new chapter aboard and congratulate them for stepping up to the plate for healthy coastlines! Washington DC The Capitol Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation held a successful Clean Water Day Paddle down the Potomac River in Washington DC. Thirty participates cruised down the Potomac on surfboards, kayaks and canoes to call attention to the need to protect our most precious resource-the ocean. The celebration of National Clean Water Day was enhanced by President Clinton's recent designation of the Potomac River as an American Heritage River. The Clean Water Network distributed the NRDC's Testing our Waters publication, which is a break down of water pollution by state, to all attendees. Capitol Style Magazine showed up to gather information for a future article on the chapter's efforts to raise awareness of national water pollution issues in inland tributaries (like the Potomac River) to our oceans and coasts. Capitol Chapter members were excited by the turn out and the opportunity to let the people on Capitol Hill know that the Surfrider Foundation will not let up in our efforts for coastal protection. San Clemente Chapter In the last issue of Making Waves we wrote about the proposed provision by Representative Ron Packard (48 District, CA.) to limit environmental review of the controversial Foothill South Toll Road. Since the than the House has passed the Transportation Bill. Representative Loretta Sanchez (46 District, CA.) has stepped up and written to the Senate House Conference Committee asking them to drop the rider. We need your assistance also to help stop this obscene, back-scratching, pork barreling, special interest attempt by Mr. Packard to circumvent the environmental review processes for such a devastating project.
