Mahalo to Chapter Eco-Activism Part III: Island Chapter News MAKING WAVES, Dec.-Jan. 1998-99 |
|
Puerto Rico Chapter Founded in 1995. The Puerto Rico Chapter has been working to get public land known as "Wilderness" turned into a national park to preserve this as open space for all to enjoy. The area is threatened by a $200 million, 300 room resort hotel, a 7,500 square foot casino, and the construction of 2 large breakwaters that would destroy one of the best waves in Puerto Rico. The chapter has also been going to local schools and community events to educate people on the need for healthy coastlines and oceans and they have introduced the Respect the Beach Program in schools. Oahu Chapter Founded in 1995. Development on Oahu has been the Oahu Chapter's focus, specifically an environmentally destructive development at Sunset Beach. The proposed development could destroy much of the natural watershed and thereby limit the nature filtration for runoff heading for Sunset Beach. The chapter has been working with state officials on water quality issues facing the Oahu coastline as well as conducting joint water testing and public outreach campaigns. The chapter implements the Respect the Beach and Storm Drain Stenciling Programs. Maui Chapter Founded in 1994. The Maui Chapter has been actively working with the Sierra Club on their effort to stop an environmentally destructive harbor expansion at Ma'alaea Harbor. The chapter has also conducted beach cleanups, reef cleanups and has helped to restore historical and sacred Hawaiian places. They have also been implementing the Respect the Beach and Storm Drain Stenciling Programs in their communities. |
