YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! MAKING WAVES, Feb.-March 1999 by Earle Callahan |
|
Individual Surfrider Foundation members testing shoreline water can make a big difference in the conditions of the surf. A good example is here in Coronado, where a member has been testing the shoreline water for 8 years, periodically. For many years, the shoreline was continually polluted from the sewage flowing from the Tijuana River at the Mexican border. Unfortunately, the County Environmental Health Department would not test and post the beach. It seems that tourist dollars outweighed the public getting sick. In the past year, the Surfrider Foundation testing was more successful in getting an adequate response. Underground water in Coronado was being pumped via the storm drain at the beach on a continuous basis. A Surfrider Foundation member's test showed that the water being pumped contained fecal coliform over the California safe limit for body contact. Since then, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board has ordered the City of Coronado to clean it up or be fined $10,000 per day. The City has spent $500,000 to date, and it is only a temporary fix. Each Surfrider Foundation member can make a difference! |
