The 15 Year Tube Ride MAKING WAVES, Feb.-March 1999 By Pierce Flynn |
|
Do you remember your first experience of the inside of a wave? That rushing, gnarling tube, combining elegance and fury? Inspiring awe and involvement? The power of Nature that is the Surfrider Foundation's logo. 1999 is Surfrider's 15th anniversary. All of us at the Surfrider Foundation, you and me included, have been tube riding one of the greatest barrels in the history of surfing. From Malibu to Ma'alaea, Imperial Beach to Sunset Beach, Humboldt to Hatteras, the Surfrider Foundation's history of unique and powerful grassroots conservation of surfing areas and ocean quality has been an awesome 15 year tube ride through the power centers of politics, courtrooms, school rooms, and coastal communities around the world. Surfrider Foundation is one of the most remarkable things to emerge from worldwide beach culture. As you will see in this issue of Making Waves, the 15 year story of Surfrider Foundation is a story of persons who love to surf in the ocean, or appreciate the beach, putting something positive back into their source of joy (so much for the old stereotype of surfers as mere selfish hedonists). As we turn 15, Surfrider has created an impressive amount of accomplishments and milestones in preserving the surfing and coastal environment. Surfrider Foundation is now truly an international conservation organization with grassroots chapters in 45 U.S. cities and affiliate organizations in Australia, France, Japan and Brazil. These victories will go on and on as Surfrider grows and changes flexibility to meet its challenges. I am proud to say that I will be changing my role within the Surfrider tube during its 15th year. I am moving on and will become the Chair of the Surfrider Foundation Advisory Board, creating an opportunity for the next Executive Director to emerge and lead the charge through the waves, for the waves. Whatever our individual roles, Surfrider at 15 is greater than the sum of its parts. We each are extremely fortunate to surf our way through this movement of synergy that is Surfrider. Stay tubed! |
