EPA giving Surfrider a tour
EPA HOSTS CHAPTER BLUE WATER TASK FORCE

MAKING WAVES, Feb.-March 1999

The U.S. EPA, Region 2, Division of Environmental Science and Assessment provided a private tour of the Edison, New Jersey biological, organic, and inorganic laboratories, and the EPA helicopter, to the 1998 Jersey Shore Chapter-Blue Water Task (BWTF) participants. Specifically, the tour focused on the EPA's water quality monitoring and surveillance activities carried out by using the EPA helicopter.
The weekly monitoring activities performed include collection and analysis of samples from 26 Long Island, New York and 44 New Jersey coastal stations in the surf zone, and are analyzed for fecal coliform and enterococcus bacteria. Phytoplankton samples are also collected semi-monthly to detect algal blooms, as well as 10 additional New Jersey perpendicular monitoring locations for collection of surface and bottom dissolved oxygen and temperature to detect anoxic conditions. This summer as BWTF interns Stephen Moramarco and Seamus Hogan collected and incubated total coliform samples at five stations in New Jersey. A summary report will be available in late fall. John Tiedeman was the principal project supervisor with assistance from Greg Pollack.
The chapter would especially wish to thank the following EPA staff: Randy Braun, Chief and Helen Greba, Environmental Scientist who are both with the Monitoring and Operations section and oversee the helicopter program; Kevin Kubick, Chief, Laboratory Branch for providing unlimited access for the tour; and finally John Bourbon, Chief Organic and Inorganic Section for personally conducting the lab tour. Additionally, thanks to Petrolieum Helicopters International for allowing access to their equipment.
