Power of One

MAKING WAVES, June/July 1999

Whenever concerned phone calls or e-mails reach the national office, it may come as a surprise that the reason their phone call was not promptly returned is there is no local chapter office. In fact, our chapter leaders and activists have real, paying jobs totally unrelated to the Surfrider Foundation. They manage and support their local chapters for free during their spare time, using money they have raised. They meet in local meeting rooms or in their own homes. This may be the definition of a grassroots volunteer, but I don't think most of us realize the commitment our local activists make to ensure our local coastal environments are protected and preserved for the future.
The "Power of One" was an old MAKING WAVES column that was dedicated to highlighting individual Surfrider volunteers. I would like to revive it, and take a moment to thank our often overlooked and overworked activists.
For the first column, I would like to spotlight Jill and Chapin Tierney. For the past year, Jill and Chapin have come into the national office on a weekly basis and do everything from stuffing membership packages and media kits to organizing and serving meals at Surfrider dinners. They have been truly loyal volunteers, always willing to rearrange their schedule at a moment's notice to provide the national office with some extra people-power.
Jill is a Laguna Beach local, a Leo and collector of Hawaiiana. Chapin is a Cancer and an awesome surfer. His favorite color is blue and his most surfed spot is Thalia Street in Laguna Beach, California.
This mother and son team, are both truly committed to the ocean and to the Surfrider Foundation and we cannot thank them enough for all their hard work!
If you have someone you would like to spotlight in the next issue of MAKING WAVES, please send in information and a picture of the volunteer to: Power of One, 122 S. El Camino Real, PMB#67, San Clemente, California 92672. Please don't forget to include their zodiac sign!
