The Massachusetts Chapter
of the Surfrider Foundation
was founded in 1996. We are an all-volunteer chapter
composed of local New England surfer / environmentalists
dedicated to the preservation of the New England coastal
environment, elimination of pollution, and open access
to our beaches.
If you are interested in helping
the environment,
protecting the coastline, surfing or having fun, we're
always looking for volunteers and new members to make
our programs successful. Visit our
membership
page for
more details.
Our meeting time and location: We usually meet the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Wainwright Bank in Davis Square, Somerville
Please check our Facebook page for the most recent info.
MEETINGS FOR JULY and AUG
Due to the holiday weekend we are getting feedback that attendance may be low this month, so in lieu of a CHAPTER meeting we would like to encourage folks to join in on the official first SOUTH SHORE FIN GROUP meeting to prep for a beach clean-up planned for July 5th...
Please note the recent location change
Rexhame Beach Clean Up & Cook Out
Location: Rexhame Beach, Marshfield
Date/Time: July 5th, 11am
Contact: SF member Trevor Failor, tfailor@yahoo.com, for more info or to volunteer.
For Aug. we are working out the details for Brickhouse Surf Shop in Gloucester to host our CHAPTER meeting/surf flick screening. We will initiate the North Shore Fin Group, and go over chapter issues.
Stay tuned for Sept. location.
ISD on the Cape was a blast ...
We cleaned, we surfed, we ate, we had sunshine and good waves! Thank you to all who came out to celebrate solstice with us. A special thank you to Olaf at Sick Day Surf shop for hosting, and to S.Wellfleet General Store, just next to the shop, for providing assistance with our Bar-b-que. Great store with a great deli; check them out when you are in the hood. Thanks to member Trevor Failor and his wife Denise for all their hard work, and all the other members, new and old, for their help!
Affinity Groups (aka Fin Groups) are forming!
This is really exciting because it was a goal set by the new executive committee to unify the chapter and to get members involved in more meaningful ways. We are still in the planning process to decide where, when, and how to administer these meetings, but we're all excited that efforts are swelling to reach out to far flung members and get more people on board with the chapters efforts to C.A.R.E (conservation, action, research, education) for MA's oceans, beaches, and waves. A South Shore Fin Group has formed meeting in Scituate. A North Shore will be forming soon, and we have contact with someone we are working with to set up a Amherst Fin Group come Sept.
Massachusetts Chapter Events Update:
Barefoot Wines Beach Clean Up 2009 - Kings Beach, Nahant, MA, July 18th
As part of Surfrider's 25th anniversary, Barefoot Wines is sponsoring twenty five national beach cleanups. The first of two Massachusetts clean ups will be at Kings Beach in Nahant. Barefoot will provide all the necessary cleaning supplies. All they asked from us in return is to round up as many volunteers as possible to make this day a total success. Afterward, we get to party courtesy of Barefoot to celebrate a job well done. So, come on out and help us put this small piece of the North Shore to rights. If you’re interested in volunteering contact Katrina, katrina.sukola@gmail.com
