Big Brothers – Big Sisters Day at the Beach

On August 13th, over
25 members of Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay from
Boston, Somerville, Lynn, Salem and other surrounding
communities learned to ride the waves courtesy of Brickhouse
Surf, Skate and Snow and the Surfrider Foundation.

Owners Mark Driscoll
and Jamie Hosker were on hand to provide surfboards
& one on one instruction. “I can’t think
of a quicker connection between a young child &
the environment than surfing. If kids get up on the
board once, they’re hooked,” says Hosker.
“These kids see that joy can come from nature
which is the primary goal of the STOKE project.”

The STOKE project
is designed to bring boys and girls from the inner city
and introduce them to the joys of surfing and provide
them with a fun day at the beach.
|

August 13th was STOKE’s inaugural event and
went off without a hitch. The weather was hot and
the waves, at 2 feet high, were just the right size
for beginners. “We hope this is the first of
many surf days we can sponsor through STOKE,”
says Hosker. “It was a great way for these kids
to beat the heat and have fun!” .
