The Massachusetts Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation
has joined the coalition of groups opposing the proposed
LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) Terminal on Outer Brewster
Island. Outer Brewster Island is part of the Boston
Harbor Islands, and is "protected" as a National
Park.
The
protection of this, and all national parks are in jeopardy
National parks are legally set aside
to preserve nature and allow public use. Allowing Brewster
Island to be developed for a LNG terminal would not
only limit access to the island, but destroy the natural
habitat and wildlife on and surrounding the harbor Islands
and have long term impact on the water quality and marine
life.
The potential safety concerns for
surrounding Hull residents and the local natural ecosystem
far outweigh any benefits that might be derived from
the propsed payoff of tax dollars.
In February there will be a legislative
hearing on House Bill 4500,
the bill to lease Outer Brewster Island in the Boston
Harbor Islands
National Park Area to AES Corporation of Arlington Virginia
to site
what they have described as the "largest LNG terminal
and storage depot in the country". Please help
to defeat this bill by becoming vocal.
