ON THE BEACH Podcast Schedule:

June 30, 2009
Michelle Duval at Surfrider HQ.
Michelle was born in the Midwest and in her early years she put in motion a trajectory toward the ocean. Was it her early experiences with the Great Lakes that piqued her coastal interest or was it those smelly crabs and shells she put in her mom's trunk? Fast forward a few years, now with a Ph.D. in marine ecology at the Duke University Marine Lab, and her life vector is set. Listen in as we talk through her early years, how and where she connected to the coastlines, what her views are on fisheries and finally her role on the Surfrider Foundation Board of Directors.

June 15, 2009
Neil Lazarow at Kirra.
Kirra is a wave that brings certain images into people’s minds. For me it’s an image of Rabbit Bartholomew on a wave so perfect it’s been drawn on kids notebooks and he’s deep. On a recent trip to Australia to work with our affiliate I met up with another name that should be near that same level of recognition, Neil Lazarow. Neil has been studying this wave and the various man-made issues that formed it, then formed the Superbank and then formed the Superbeach. This is a dredging-gone-awry story, one that’s worth hearing. Perhaps even more interesting is Neil’s back story, how he came to this spot in his life and where he sees himself going next. I asked Neil for the Kirra story but what I got was something even more powerful.

May 31, 2009
Dan Murphy at Cardiff Reef.
A few years ago I did the San Diego / Tijuana watershed tour with the crew from WildCoast and it was eye opening. The amount of trash, the intensity of toxicity and the fact that it all flows into a state park... left an imprint on my brain that won't go away. The Imperial Beach area has issues; pollution, run-off, trash, beach closures... their cup overflows... with sewage. I caught up with Dan Murphy the other morning to capture his story and how it's now intersecting the border region.

May 15, 2009
Rogan Gregory and Scott Hahn, on Venice Boulevard.
I first learned of Rogan a few years back when he provided an artwork for the first Art for the Oceans auction. Loomstate, the label he founded with Scott Hahn, also provided tshirts for the event that were among the softest, best tshirts I've ever worn (we still get requests for them). The reason I mention this is that the shirts were sourced from certified organic cotton. Loomstate is to fashion what Patagonia is to sports. They are early adopters, they are influencers, they are mavens. I was intrigued with them from the second I heard about them and every interaction I've had since has made me understand how their vision for their brand overlaps with Surfrider's mission. We caught up on Venice Boulevard over lunch.

April 30, 2009
Michael Rhodes, on the beach, Southern atolls in the Maldives.
I can't remember the first time I met Michael Rhodes but something tells me it was in the water. He's a local at 15th Street in Del Mar, California. He's also a powerhouse and senior partner at Cooley Godward Kronish, providing principal commercial litigation counsel to influential companies including eBay and Skype. We didn't talk about any of this...we talked about how he got there, why he loves the oceans and why he has directed his time, energy, services and money toward our Surfrider mission. Listen in.

April 15, 2009
Dick Baker at Surfrider hq.
Dick Baker has a unique perspective on things. As a veteran of such brands as Esprit and Tommy Hilfiger this San Clemente denizen and former New York resident has a bicoastal and multifacted view of the retail world. He came into the surf industry from the outside and quickly rose to the top insider position as leader of the industry's trade association. All the while he has had a hand on the wheel at the Surfrider Foundation - helping to guide us from time to time and helping us to connect in a meaningful way. Listen in as I catch up with Dick at the Surfrider Foundation global offices in San Clemente.

March 31, 2009
Rick Erkeneff at Salt Creek in Southern California.

March 15, 2009
Stefanie Sekich at Swamis in Southern California.
Before I joined the Surfrider Foundation, I sought out Stefanie Sekich to understand her perspective on things. Stefanie is a force within our San Diego Chapter, and it was clear she was a key player. Fast forward a couple years and she was as the backbone of the Save Trestles campaign. Today, Stefanie is one of the leading forces on Marine Protected Areas at the Surfrider Foundation. I've wanted to capture her story for a long time, and on a crisp day in March we caught up at Swamis.

February 28, 2009
Bob Mignogna at Trestles in SoCal.
Bob Mignogna grew up in New York City and moved to Hawaii after reading a Drew Kampion story on the north shore. He later ran Surfing Magazine and in the past few years acted as one of the key enablers to get the surfing industry involved in the Trestles campaign. If you work in the surf industry chances are you've received a notable number of emails from Bob with updates and calls to action regarding Trestles. I wanted to hear more of the back story on all those things so we recorded a podcast on the beach at Cottons.

February 15, 2009
Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins in San Clemente, California.
Lots of people have heard about the garbage patch, a plastic-soup in the middle of the Pacific Ocean the size of Texas. On this podcast I catch up with two researchers at Algalita. Dr. Marcus Eriksen, one of the two on the podcast, also has the notoriety of being one of the two people to sail a junk craft (made up of 15,000 plastic bottles) from LA to HI last year. He's joined by Anna Cummins who will join him on a Vancouver to Mexico bike ride this summer. The ride is oriented towards bringing the message to the masses about the perils of plastics and how they are having massive impact on our oceans. We caught up at Surfrider's hq in San Clemente.

January 31, 2009
Fernando Aguerre in San Francisco.
Lots of people know Fernando as the front man for Reef Sandals. They may also know he's a Wind-an-Sea local and has a board collection that makes most mortals drool. What they might not know is his life story, growing up in Mar Del Plata, Argentina and eventually being the driving force behind starting Surfrider Argentina. He and I caught up on a trip home from San Francisco. Seeing he's such a world traveler I thought it would be apropos to capture a podcast in the SFO airport. Listen in (listener discretion advised, I'm kidding... sorta).

January 15, 2009
Rob "Birdlegs" Caughlan
Rob's history intersects Surfrider greatly but, as he puts it, perhaps mostly because he was the only guy with a collared shirt and a few neckties. He was President of this fine organization a few years back and, on this podcast, shares his views on our history. He and I caught up walking the Pillar Point harbor at Half Moon Bay in Northern California.
[Download the ".mp3" version, 13 MB]

December 31, 2008
Brad Farmer on the beach in Half Moon Bay, California.
Brad has led a storied life. He's been arrested by the KGB. He was the force behind starting Surfrider Australia. If that's not enough he and Rabbit created the concept of "National Surfing Reserves" about 17 years ago and it's a concept that is catching on in Australia. He and I caught up walking the shores of Pillar Point (Mavericks) at a Save The Waves conference where we met to talk about taking his concept, via Save The Waves, around the world. Listen in.

December 15, 2008
Cobi Emery at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar, California.
When Cobi was ten years old he decided to create a video instead of write an essay. For a subject of the video he decided to turn to something he loved and something that bugged him... Surfing and trash. What followed was "Pick up 3" a video about he and his buddies commitment to pick up three pieces of trash as they leave the ocean after a surf. This then thrust him into Surfing Magazine as a green leader. He's 14 now and I caught up with him at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar, California. He told me the back story to the video and why his foot was bleeding as we talked and watched the sun set.

Nov. 30, 2008
Glenn Suba on the beach in Buzios, Brazil.
From South Africa to England to Western Australia to Brazil, Glenn's connection with our coasts and oceans transcends national boundaries.
[Download the ".mp3" version, 19 MB]

Nov. 15, 2008
Mark Massara at coastal Del Mar in San Diego County.
The defining moment in Mark Massara's life came early. From that point forward he's been a driver, an engine and increasingly an icon in California's coastal conservation movement. We caught a few minutes in-between the marathon testimony at the Secretary of Commerce hearings for San Onofre State Park/Save Trestles. Listen in, this man defines the intersection of wisdom and action.
[Download the ".mp3" version, 16 MB]

Oct. 31, 2008
Gilles Asenjo, recorded on the beach in Biarritz, France.
When Gilles was two years old he crawled into the ocean. Today he's President of Surfrider Foundation Europe. In between he grew up in the gorgeous Côte Basque region of France and became a French surfing champion. This podcast walks through the formation of Surfrider Europe and lends some depth to how our mission has taken root (and flourished) throughout Europe.

Oct. 15, 2008
Bobby Shriver in Santa Monica, CA.
Bobby Shriver was on the California State Park and Recreation Commission until recently when his brother-in-law, Arnold Schwarzenegger, chose not to reappoint him (due to Bobby's stance against the proposed Toll road through a state park). He's also on the Santa Monica City Council and co-founded DATA and Project Red with Bono. Listen in as we catch up walking his dog in Santa Monica.
[Download the ".mp3" version, 34 MB]

Sept. 30, 2008
Brian Wilson, Beach music icon, in the Tonight Show green room.
"It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life." -- Paul McCartney. When you think of music and think of the beach what comes to mind? I'm guessing your short list will include Brian Wilson, I know mine does. Brian and I chatted about his growing up in coastal California, his music and the full revolution of a California experience he's had.

September 15, 2008
Ellis Pickett, Texas mainstay, on the steps of the Capital in Austin.
Ellis was one of the drivers that put Surfrider on the map in the great state of Texas. In fact, for the past ten years he's been our go-to man for all things Texas. Ten years ago there was no Surfrider presence and today there are four vibrant chapters. In a land whose ocean boundaries triple every other state's and a state with perhaps the most progressive beach access policy, this means a lot. I caught up with Ellis on the steps of the Capital in Austin, during a break from the Texas Regional Conference. Listen up.

August 31, 2008
Chris Keys on the beach at San Onofre.
Surfrider's volunteer Chief Financial Officer (CFO) extraordinaire for almost 15 years, Chris belongs to a select, small group of people who are most responsible for Surfrider's growth and increasing success.

August 15, 2008
Ximena Waissbluth, originally from Chile, is to single-use plastics as Al Gore is to Global Warming. That is, she took the subject of single-use plastics, built a straightforward presentation around it and took it on the road. She will deliver her 75th presentation of this by the time you're listening to this podcast. Ximena, thanks for taking our mission and seeking to accomplish it in ways that are outside our existing boundaries.

July 31, 2008
Darryl Hatheway is one of those people that keeps popping up. He was on Capital Hill serving as a Surfrider liaison during the critical time period of the BEACH Bill introduction and passage. He was instrumental in the creation and maturing of the DC Chapter. Now he has moved from the Beltway to Encinitas and has his sights set on surfing Beacons and Stone Steps as much as possible. Listen in to hear a few chapters of our history as told by Darryl himself. Recorded in mid-July on the beach at Swami's.

July 15, 2008
Michelle Kremer & Ed Mazzarella in the conference room at Surfrider HQ.
Ed Mazzarella and Michelle Kremer have been with Surfrider Foundation for a long time. Ed was first and Michelle came on about a year later, each has been here about 15 years. Listen in as you hear their view on what has transpired, how things were during the double-live-gonzo years and where we're going. Oh... and if there are people, living people, that know more about grassroots organizing and law... we have yet to meet them.
[Download the ".mp3" version, 29 MB]

May 31, 2008
Pierce Flynn, on the beach at Swami's, CA.
Pierce was one of our maverick Executive Directors. He was the visionary and executor behind getting us onto MTV, Baywatch and the insane MOM albums. His story is worth hearing... especially in his own voice with his own tone, lexicon and stoke. Push play and enter the world of Pierce.

May 15, 2008
Julia Chunn, at Swami's Café in Encinitas, CA
Julia was born and bred in San Diego, became smitten with the ocean while perching on the front of her dad's longboard as a kid, came up through the ranks of the San Diego chapter, went on to lead the San Diego chapter and is now moving to Australia to take the top slot at Surfrider Australia. Wow.

April 30, 2008
Randy Rarrick, on the beach at Haleiwa Beach Park.
Randy has been to Africa 50 times. He was pushed into his first wave by Rabbit Kekai. He's been THE man for contests on the North Shore since they started. He's also been a major supporter and force for Surfrider Foundation, especially with professional surfers. I caught up with Randy on the beach at Haleiwa Beach park as the canoes were coming in and the sun was going down.

April 15, 2008
Glenn Hening at Scripps Institute, steps from La Jolla pier.
I caught up with the Glenn Hening at the Seventh Annual Groundswell Society Conference. The conference covered surfing arts, science and issues and in some ways it reflects the singular person that Glenn is. Listen up as we cover everything from wave forecasting in the 40s to a Cousteau Society for surfers.

March 31, 2008
Shaun Tomson, at Butterfly Beach, Montecito, CA.
Shaun Tomson is perhaps the most eloquent professional surfer in history. But he's more than that. Shaun has had deep involvement with our campaigns and programs stretching back multiple decades... and he's not letting up. Just last year he probably logged a thousand miles going to and from various events that in some way benefited our mission. There is a phrase used in our inner circle, "constant pressure, endlessly applied". It's used to describe our need for consistent engagement. Shaun is "constant support, endlessly applied". It's always a pleasure to sit down and catch up with Shaun, this time we caught up at Butterfly Beach in Montecito, California.

March 15, 2008
Paul Naudé, at the Billabong HQ in Irvine.
Paul Naudé, President of Billabong USA, has been a supporter of Surfrider for as long as we can remember. Beyond that he's shown great leadership in not only bringing environmental awareness into the surf industry but also putting his money where his mouth is. Paul is usually a man of few words but in this podcast he shares his life story with the detail that paints a picture of an aware and involved global citizen. My favorite part of this podcast is about 30 minutes into the conversation when I ask him about the environmental part of his story and in an almost anticlimactic moment Paul shares in a matter of fact tone "look, if you're a surfer you notice clean water and dirty water" and succinctly paints how straightforward surfers should see environmental issues.

February 29, 2008
Mark Babski in San Clemente in Southern California.
Few people reflect the Surfrider brand with as much accuracy as Mark Babski: global citizen yet locally integrated, highly educated yet accessible and down to earth, politically astute yet environmentally conscious, a listener and yet the first person to act. Mark has been around Surfrider for the last 15 years. He has seen a lot here and held a lot of it together over the years. I sat down with Mark on a blustery February day on a San Clemente beach. Listen in.

February 15, 2008
Scott Werney and Marvin Heskett from the Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter, recorded at Point Panic.
Any time you land in Hawai'i it feels special. From the lava fields of the big island to the insane Napali Coast of Kaua'i... to the ledging waves on Oahu's North Shore. I caught up with Scott Werny and Marvin Heskett from Surfrider's O'ahu chapter and heard an update on what is happening on the "Gathering Place", the third largest Hawaiian Island. We sat at Point Panic, watched the sun set and talked story.

January 30, 2008
Ericka D'Avanzo, Surfrider's Florida Regional Manager, in a rental car powering north somewhere on I-95 in Florida.
Few people have accomplished in their lives what Ericka has in the two years she's been in Florida. To the wonderful and growing web of Floridian activists, Ericka is their glue, their mentor and their champion. Listen up; this is the sound of activism... redlining.

January 15, 2008
TJ Marshall, of Surfrider's South Florida Chapter, at Joe Allen in Miami Beach, FL.
Action-central in Miami is TJ Marshall's roving car; packed with development blueprints he is watchdogging, a 6-something thruster to nab that ephemeral swell and a sticker on the rear window reading "Surfing is not a crime". TJ is "on it" in so many ways, figuring out how to cobble together ad-hoc enviro strategies in midst of beach high rises. Maybe we should call him TJ MacGyver.

December 30, 2007

December 15, 2007
Alberto Figari, Chair of Lima (Peru) Chapter Organizing Committee, somewhere in San Clemente, CA.
Alberto is just like the rest of us; he grew up in Peru, he surfs lefts like Gerry, he presided over the famed Club Waikiki and he is up to his waist in environmental activist issues. No, he's not like any of us. He and a few others are the archetypal environmental leaders in South America... and we're not.

Sept 15, 2007
"Dr." Rick Wilson, at Surfrider HQ in San Clemente
They say still water runs deep, that applied to Rick Wilson. Rick is perhaps the least vocal of the staffers at the San Clemente Surfrider HQ and yet he probably also publishes more than anyone. He's the author of the State of the Beach and has lots of fingerprints on the Coastal A – Z. Listen in... And learn about his run ins with John-the-law at Trestles back in the day before it was accessible.
