Ocean Awareness Days
Hey! The National Aquarium is working on an outreach program and
they need our support! Ocean Awareness Days are an opportunity to
share a conservation message with the throngs of summer beach
goers. I have pasted below a listing of the events that will take
place. Please e-mail Ed Eads or Cindi Perry, if you can

Events:
Monday – “Reaching the Beach”
July 25, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Set-up time: 9:30am, team areas to be designated
Location: Ocean City & Assateague Beach, MD
Cape Henlopen, Rehoboth, Dewey, & Bethany Beach, DE
MARP staff and volunteers in designated teams will travel up and down the beaches of Ocean City, Assateague Island, MD and Lewes, Rehoboth, and Bethany beaches, DE with various marine animal artifacts to awe and inspire on-looking crowds into asking questions. Artifacts
will included a fin whale vertebrae, sea turtle shells with boat strike
lesions, a narwhal tusk, the lower jaw of a sperm whale, and several
dolphin skulls and seal pelts, to name a few. Exhibits will be set up at various pre-selected locations, acting as “satellite stations” for the roving exhibitors.

Wednesday – “Ocean Awareness Days Symposium”
Cape Henlopen State Park, July 27, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Set up time: 8:00 am, (designated teams to Bethany)
Location: Cape Henlopen State Park
Bethany Boardwalk Stage
The
idea for this symposium is to provide ocean health activities, while
incorporating all of the excellent environmental education activities
provided by the state park. This partnership between the Aquarium and Cape Henlopen will provide an enjoyable experience for visitors to Delaware’s shores, while hopefully setting precedence for future events like these.
Exhibitors: Please be on time to set up as we want to be ready for the public by 9:30am. Aquarium staff will be on hand to help you setup if needed. This event will be held outside, so please dress accordingly and bring sunblock and/or hat at your discretion. The selling of any item during the symposium is prohibited. Lunch will be provided.

Ocean City Bonfire stories
After dark, 8:00pm - ???
Set-up time: 8:30pm
Location: Ocean City Boardwalk area
David
Schofield, Manager of Ocean Health Programs will be joining Donna
Abbott as the guest speaker at the weekly bonfire near OC’s Boardwalk. Donna has invited the Aquarium to share conservation stories and answer questions about our programs in the area.
Friday – Dolphin Count
July 29, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Set-up time: 8:00 am, designated teams to be announced
Location: Ocean City & Assateague beaches, MD (sites designated during week)
The culmination of our will be to count dolphins. Reserved
members of the public, NAIB staff and volunteers, and US Coast Guard
will join together to spot and record the number of Atlantic bottlenose
dolphins sighted in the waters off of Ocean City during the allotted time. The
bulk of the observations will be taken from the beach, supporting the
most significant observations from 3 marine vessels, and 2 aircraft.
Evening reception
Seacrets Bar and Grille, 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Set-up: 2:00 pm, collect at door 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Location: Ocean City, MD
An evening reception will be held at Seacrets, Jamaica USA Bar and Grille. It
will include such family fun activities as face painting, a treasure
hunt, crafts, and a large underwater mural, as well as many exciting
artifacts for families to see and feel. We are hoping to bring back the
US Coast Guard to join in the fun with a mock helicopter rescue over
the back bay for the families to experience. In
the later evening, it will be time to focus on the adult visitors, with
artifacts and marine mammal-related trivia questions, MARP-themed drink
specials, & competitions throughout the night. |
