As in previous years, the Surfrider Foundation is hosting beach clean-ups and other events in locations throughout the world. Surfrider activists nationwide paddle out to raise awareness of water quality. In 2009, Surfing Magazine will be working with the Surfrider Foundation to use the day to also help raise awareness of beach and coastal environmental issues. Besides the expected "surfing" organizations, invites will be extended to locale environmental groups and National/local political leaders to join us in the quest to inform the public of our combined efforts to achieve and maintain a clean water environment. For several years, DelMarVa area surfers joined together in a "Circle of Solidarity" clean water paddle (see pictures and more here). Expected to attend this year are Ocean City's Mayor and Capt. Attend the Hearing on Saturday, Nov 7th, 2009!!!
The City of Rehoboth Beach has been ordered by the EPA to stop polluting our inland bays by dumping treated sewage in the Rehoboth-Lewes Canal. On November 7th, 2009 (10am Rehoboth Fire Hall), the public has a chance to let the City know how we feel about the alternative plans for this wastewater.

The Delaware Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation strongly opposes the creation of an ocean outfall in Rehoboth Beach! The ocean is not a dump! Let’s not treat it as one.

Clean and healthy beaches are the single most important driver of Rehoboth Beach's tourism-based economy.

Tell the Mayor and City Commissioners that they should choose the LBA option if they are serious about protecting our City's beaches, economy and way of life.

An ocean outfall will be bad for our City because:
  • It will turn tourists away. People will not choose to vacation at a beach where treated sewage is being pumped off-shore. They will choose a better option.
  • The nutrients in the wastestream will harm our coastal environment. Excess nutrients help fuel Red Tides and other Harmful Algal Blooms and the outfall pipe will be interrupting Essential Fish Habitat.
  • It is a waste of fresh water. We can treat and reuse the water where it is most needed.
  • It is a waste of money. The City's cost study does not take into consideration future costs of the outfall, such as loss of tourism, harm to environment and opportunities squandered to conserve fresh water.
The Surfrider Foundation instead supports Land Based Application (LBA) as the better option to recycle our wastewater and protect our beaches, environment and local economy.

LBA is good for Rehoboth Beach because it will:
  • recharge our groundwater, protecting our water supply. Delaware has gone through drought conditions. We can't be wasting our fresh water;
  • provide a weather independent supply of freshwater for large-scale irrigation needs;
  • help protect water quality, as crops, turf and other plants filter out some of the remaining pollution in the wastewater by taking up nutrients, particularly nitrogen which has been especially problematic in our coastal waters; and
  • protect against salt water intrusion into our groundwater.

Respect the Beach Awareness & Education Initiative 2007/08
The Ocean City Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and affiliated “O.C. Legends” would like to donate this hard cover book, Cabo & Coral Go Surfing, to your library. Though primarily concerned with surf zone environmental health, the Surfrider Foundation strives to garnish and maintain accessible beaches for all to enjoy.

[Cabo & Coral Go Surfing Hardcover Book Donation, $25 plus $5 s/h.
]

The popularity of surfing has increased exponentially in the last few years. As our numbers continue to grow, our beaches and waves will become even more crowded. Unfortunately, over-crowding often brings out the “less than desirable” in some. We hope this book will be one of the first steps in perpetuating the “spirit of aloha” that should be equated with our sport.

On behalf of the OC Surfriders and OC Legends, I am pleased to extend this offering of “ALOHA” to your young readers.

Ola, Mi Amigo!, Gra-sea-us (hi, my friend, thanks).

That’s what every beachgoer to OC should be say’n to Terry our official “IN,” with the City and head of our “Footprints” program. He’s put those Spanish stickers on the blue trash barrels that fill the OC beaches.

Then he’s gone and attacked the back of OC’s trash trucks. Give the guy an extra wave in the line-up!

Bill Wise Memorial Ocean City Paddle Out -- "All Good"

Bill Wise Memorial Paddle-Out
(9.22.38-2.23.07)

This morning, in Hawaiian tradition, the surf community said ALOHA to our friend and mentor, Bill Wise. Surfers, friends and family gathered at the beach at 37th St. to celebrate Bill's ocean-centered life. Through his articles in local papers and major surf periodicals and his photography, Bill shared his love of the ocean with his friends around the world. One of the earliest east coast surf shop owners, East Coast Surf Hall of Fame and OC Legend, Bill enjoyed life, family and surf. A lone antique “Hobie” surfboard floated beyond the break as the surfers formed the “circle of unity”. As the symbolic “pohaku” was placed in the ocean and a cheer of “aloha’ given, the family placed Bill’s ashes in the ocean Bill loved so much. As Bill always said -- "ALL GOOD."  Read the presentation by Randy (Makuakane) Myer.

In less than good conditions the Malibu’s Surf Team took home the bragging rights for a third time - out distancing last year's champions, Team Ashton. Aloha to a Friend, Bill Wise. "All Good"
The Ocean City surfing community will say "aloha" to one of it's originals, Mr. Bill Wise, on Feb 27th. Bill established one of the first surfboard shops on the East Coast in 1962, "the Eastern Surfer," with partner and friend, George Pittman, in Harrington, DE, and Ocean City, MD, and later in Rehobeth, DE. Wheel chair bound from a 1965 surfing accident, Bill was surfing's greatest fan and supporter, as well as photographer and writer. He mentored, through his enthusiasm, many of the first and second generation OC surfers. In 1996, "Wild Bill" was inducted in to the East Coast Surfing Legends Hall of Fame for his lifelong contributions to the sport.

Bill was also an original member of the "OC Legends" of the Ocean City Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, established in 2001. His stoke and love for the ocean and outdoors was boundless and his infectious smile will be missed at our annual event. But, as Bill would say, "ALL GOOD."

Paddle for Clean Water

Aloha,

On behalf of the OCMd Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, I'd like to thank all the participants in this year's successful "Circle of Solidarity" Clean Water Paddle:  The Surfrider Capitol and Delaware Chapters, DelMarVa ESA, Annapolis Surf Club, 62nd St. Longboard Club, Christian Surfers, and Ocean City Beach Patrol... plus, Kathy Phillips (former head of ESA, and candidate for office), Butch Arbin (head of the OCBP) and Alan Reed (Chairman of the Malibu Chapter), for their words and encouragement.

You have all demonstrated that surfers are responsible, active and accountable members of the community, and that as Margaret Mead stated, "Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. They are, in fact, the only ones that ever have." [See more pics here.]

Sept 2005 - Clean Water Paddles From Coast to Coast
In an effort to bring attention to the ongoing degradation of our coasts and oceans, the Surfrider Foundation holds an annual National Paddle For Clean Water Weekend. That weekend, Surfrider Foundation chapters across the country provide people the opportunity to rally at their favorite beach and paddle out to form a circle of solidarity to address their concerns and voice their opinions regarding the state of our coasts and oceans. The Capitol, Delaware and Ocean City Chapters partner in these paddle outs at local coastal beaches. For more information, visit the Surfrider Foundation's nationwide event website at: Surfrider's Paddle for Clean Water.

What state is your beach in?
Find out the answer to that and many other questions in Surfrider Foundation's 2005 State of the Beach report that was released on July 28th. The State of the Beach report is a deep coastal resource that's great for anyone with more than a passing interest in our coastal environment. Especially useful for Coastal Zone Managers, too.
