Coos Bay Dredging
On June 13, the US Army Corps (Portland District) announced an application by the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay. The permit would be for five-years of dredging in Coos Bay, for navigational safety purposes. If permitted, up to 57,000 cubic yards per year could be dredged. Dredged materials will be discharged at a "confined upland site or US EPA approved Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Sites F and H." The ocean disposal sites are located just off Coos Bay. A US EPA final rule designated Site F in 2006. The nearshore boundary of Site F is within 2,000 feet of the shoreline. The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development is reviewing the proposed project for consistency with the Oregon Coastal Management Program. The Public Notice does not provide specific information about sediment quality and discharge criteria at the possible disposal sites. Public comments on the proposal are due by July 13.
